Mule Deer and Black-tails are related species.Usually found in the western and northwestern U.S. (They have been known to cross breed with Whitetails in areas where both are present) They run completely different than a Whitetail and they literally look like the are bouncing or bounding as they run around. They classically have large ears hence the "Mule" reference.Black-tailed and Mule Deer do not stick their tail up in most cases when alarmed as Whitetails do.Black tails and Mulies have a definitive black border on the outside edge of their tails which is very distinguishable.

Whitetails are native to most all of the U.S. They have a "White tail" or flag as it's referred to and when alarmed the white tail sticks straight up into the air and can be seen at a distance. Many times a hunter will see the tail before they realize there is a Deer attached to it...lol. When Whitetails run they run flat straight and fast, and can easily leap many feet at a time, gracefully.....

Black tailed and mule deer are the same, as far as I know. 'White tailed deer are a little bit smaller, at least from what I've seen. I'm not an expert, though.
