Fortunately it is mostly only the far left that are demanding a total withdrawal of combat troops.
They want us to withdraw so they can say they got us out of the "quagmire" that the Republicans got us into.
What they are wanting is to gain the white house and any cost is not too much.
The cost they are playing with is every troops live that was lost in Iraq. Without victory their deaths are meaningless. And with out victory the freedom of 25 million Iraqis is nothing more than a dream.

To my understanding, even the Democrats are not even asking for a full troop withdraw from Iraq. The plan that I have heard was for US Troops to pull back to larger FOBs and oversea the Iraqi Army. We still conduct raids within respective sectors assigned to those units, but a great deal of the responseability will fall now onto the shoulders of the Iraqi Army, Iraqi Police, and National Police. We aren't leaving anytime soon no matter who is in charge.

The Congressional Democrats do not want US troops out of Iraq. If they did, they would have seen to it long ago. It's simple math. All they had to do from the get go is not pass any funding bills, and a simple majority can do that. Instead, they wasted time on non-binding resolutions and pretending that funding military operations in Iraq would end military operations in Iraq. Must be the new math.
Yes, if they didn't pass funding, they would likely lose most of the little military vote they have. Their popularity would probably suffer, as well, but it already dipped to 11% at one point.
All this would, of course, involve keeping campaign promises.

It's doubtful the troops will be out of Iraq before the end of this decade, however we could see some troop withdrawal before the end of election year (08). This isn't to say that troop withdrawals are happening anytime soon in Afghanistan. Remember, there are two wars going on, however the liberals don't complain nearly as much about the other one. I believe this is because most liberals cannot spell Afghanistan !

Actually, the Democrats, in general, do NOT favor a TOTAL withdraw from Iraq. For example, leading Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton wants to leave a residual US military presence in Iraq.

The Dems are scared that the surge will work, and that they have been totally inept at trying to run Congress.
The Dems are playing right into the GOP playbook if they let 200,000 DoD employees get laid-off because the Dems refuse to vote on Iraq until 2008...
