My husband is VERY allergic to cat hair, but we have two dogs. Just because you are allergic to one, it doesn't mean you will be allergic to the other. Get tested or spend a lot of time around dogs before you actually adopt or buy one. Getting a dog is a lifetime commitment, and you don't want to have to return it or put it in a shelter because you end up unable to keep it. There are so-called hypoallergenic breeds and cross-breeds. You can see a list here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypoallergenic_dog_breeds
Some of the cross-breeds are the Labradoodle (Labrador and Poodle) and the Goldendoodle (Golden Retriever and Poodle).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_doodle
You can Google these to see photos and read more about them.
Since you are prone to allergies, consider one of these dogs above, get a dog that keeps dander and shedding to a minimum and has a single, not a double, coat.

If you are allergic to cat hair, I would suggest that you get an allergy test to make sure you are not allergic to dog's hair as well before you try for a dog. It would be sad to get one only to have to give it away because you are also allergic to them.
The better type of dog to reduce the possibility of allergies is to get one of those that don't shed, like poodles and poodle crosses.

I believe the best kind of dog for you would be a poodle, they have fleece not hair and have been proven to be the best for allergic people, there are three sizes of poodle... minature, toy and standard.
Anyway go to a dog site and look up all the information you want about them...
By the way they are exceptionally intelligent animals too...

Rat terrier. My sister got one for her kid. He has allergies to lots of stuff. They've had it for over 5 years now. It is a cute little dog, well mannered.

you should be able to have any kind of dog. i raise chihuahuas and have found that they are the best even for people that are alergig to dogs. I gave a chihuahua to a little girl that was alergic to other dogs and she was not alergig to him.
