Between those I would choose the XD-40.
Top two of my overall manufacturer would be Sig or Springfield (for the .40 cal)

XD all the way... I had a Smith and got rid of it 4 months after I got it. To many issues. I would suggest you shoot .40 cal before you purchase if possible. I prefer the 9mm and .45 over .40. The .40 as to much of a snap recoil. After a couple of months I had some serious pain in my wrist and arm that disappeared when going to the other two calibers. Safe Shootin

I never have bought either one, but I've always wanted a Winchester 92 carbine and a Colt SAA both chambered in 38-40, perhaps not the most popular of the 40 calibers but still as good as any.
Oops! I just saw your subtext and completely lost interest.

Plastic S&W's have a terrible reputation. The Sigma's were a big fiasco they couldn't give them a way. I personally don't like Springfield's either cheap imitation of a Glock. Speaking of Glock, the trigger safety sucks major hind quarters. If you are set on a plastic gun HK makes about best fullsize with Kahr ruling the compact catagory. FN makes a hi power in 40 S&W with a 10 round mag.

.40 S&W is a decent cartridge. It far outshines the 9mm, but falls just short of .45acp. It came into being when the FBI ordered new weapons in 10mm. After doing so, they figured out that it was too hot of a round for use as a law enforcement weapon because of overpenetration, and because many agents with smaller hands could not control it's recoil, or shoot accurately with it. So they started working backwords to find a cartridge that performed better than 9mm and kicked less than 10mm or even .45acp (the wimps!!) my personal take is that the xp is the stronger and better weapon of the two.

The XD is far better. It's more durable, and I've heard people already having serious wear issues on the slide rails with their M&P. S&W has always made good revolvers, but haven't really gotten good at autoloaders yet.

The Glock model 22 is my choice. I will no longer buy any S&W's, and I don't particularly like the Springfield XD's.
