nail fungus....usually has thickening of the nail also. If it is just white lines it may be from trauma...like if you run, or if your shoes are too tight, hitting the end of your nails on the shoes.
Nail fungus does need attention as this can spread.

you could be anemic, have you been checked? low hemaglobin can make you nail beds pale.
