if it has been going on for a week you should have already gone to the doctor. it is not good to have an infection in your body like that. it could get into your blood. I don't think they will just call you in an antibiotic without seeing you. it could be something else that would need a different medicine.

Aww, i know what that is like..im sorry sweetie. You have an absess unfortunatly. But there is great news! Wose case senerio you can go to a local hospital to the ER and they will perscribe you antibiotic and pain meds until your dentist is available, they cannot refuse treatment and open 24/7.
If your doctor/denstist knows you well, he may call in a script for you, it cant hurt to call and ask him..make sure you follow up with him when hes available.
When you have a tooth/root absess yes penicillian is the best, my husband is a pharmacist, ive had them before..as long as you are allergic to the cillians in which case there are things like clydamican or other sulferbased antibiotics that will work.
For now, if you have any pain, swish with warm salty water, and apply warm compress to help drain it..or cold one and off on the cheek for 20 mins to relieve swelling. Eat soft foods and DONT TOUCH IT.
Good luck hon

My son had an infected tooth and he called a dentist at his home and told him the situation. He wasn't even this dentist's patient but he came into the office and got Ross a prescription for an antibotic and a pain killer, with the agreement he would come in for an appointment in a few days. CALL your dentist or even your family physician and tell them your situation. It wouldn't be out of the realm of possibilities to go to the emergency room if it's bad enough. Remember your mouth is right next to your brain. Infection is nothing to mess around with. CALL now.

Yes, otherwise you are going to be in for a long painful weekend! If it's an infection then I think that's going to be the only thing that can clear it up,providing you haven't had a recent infection and treatment for anything else which requires antibiotics. Check out you have no allergy to antibioticsif your doc is not familiar with your medical records.
Best of luck!

BEST TO PHONE THE nhs help line
icould suggest that you take some pain killersto ease the pain and then get to the dentist in the morning as an infection in a tooth could leadto it getting into the boan and then that is painful and takes an age to get rid off.
My son had an infection like this

First of all, slow down. It may be something else. Penicillin will only help if there is an infection. Something it may just be something superficial and not internal. You may want to try something over the counter or even warm salt water, if it is the gums. You can call the doctor and give him the symptoms, and then he can advice you as to what to do.

Are you in the UK? Is so, call NHS direct on 0845 46 47 and they can book you in with an out of hours doctor. On call doctors usually visit patients at home who are bed ridden and urgently ill, so if you're living in America, and don't have a system like us, wait until the week. Get well soon x

Most won't do that.
Best would be to go to an urgent care (not ER). You should be able to find them unless you live in a real rural area. If you live in a real rural area, though, you have a better shot of the on-call doctor calling you back and helping.
Urgent care places are really good on the weekends and they aren't that expensive.
Hope you feel better.

Most doctors won't give antibiotics over the phone anymore. If you can't get into your doctor and the pain is too much, try a walk-in clinic... they can usually get you in and out in no time at all and most insurances will cover the visits.
Feel better :)

Go to the doctor.
Do not take antibiotics w/o a prescription from your doctor. You could have some odd thing that where penicillin would make it worse or something!
