I just bought steamers from my local grocery store. Should they be completely sealed, or slightely opened? Also I have yet to cook them, and they smell really, really bad! Is this normal, or should I not even bother cooking my steamers? Now based on both these facts should I, or should I not cook and eat my steamers?

any seafood that smells bad is generally rotten, and your steamers may already be dead. if the shells are open, tap them with your finger. they should close if they are alive. if they don't do anything, i would presume them dead and strongly suggest not eating them. i've gotten some terrible food poisoning from shellfish before. i hope this helps you out!

If they smell bad say bye bye to them. The rule is if they close when you tap them then they are ok. If they don't open after you cook them then they are bad. But man if they smell bad and slightly open, there is no way I would even bother

definitely rotten... i wouldnt chance it, i would rather spend $100 and buy new steamers than go through the pain of food poisoning from clams!!! It is deathly!!!

If they smell bad return them. Even if they are still alive they could be tainted. Had bad oysters once, never again. No one deserve that kind of pain. When in doubt throw it out.

No, if they smell you don't want to eat them...seafood should not smell fishy..they should be completetly closed before you cook them as well..don't use them.

don't eat them! Yes, they should be tightly closed. (I would return them to store)
