A true alto (contralto) is rare. In church and school choirs, most of the people who sing alto are really mezzo-soprano. In fact, most of the women are mezzo-soprano.
Alto is about more than the range of the voice, it's about the quality in tone and timbre. For a good pop example of an alto, listen to Anne Murray or Karen Carpenter.
I am a Tenor I and sing alto parts all the time. Some of the coolest chord resolutions are in the alto part.

In my experience, Alto singers are WAY more common than a real Soprano. Loads of 'Soprano' singers are actually Altos. It's really not a battle between the parts though, which some people seem to see it is, its just music. Usually the Soprano part can get a more interesting line to sing, but it depends on the peice.

TRUE altos are very rare. in middle school choruses, altos ar eusually just people who perfer lwoer melodies or hav a lower sound. you dont knwo your TRUE range until early 30's
when your voice is fully developed

Not that rare. Half of my church choir is alto.
I'm a mid-alto to high-tenor.
