It's mainly just French foods, but I completely suck at cooking American foods even though it's said I have American in me. I mainly just have German in me, but I've grew up in America, and still cook foreign foods better...

What is your other heritage? French? Did you grow up eating food cooked French-style?

I would say don't complain. If you can cook that style of food better than "American" food than you must be a gifted cook. Julia Child was famous for her French cuisine as was Jaques Pepin. The typical American diet is very unhealthy anyway. Mediterranean and Asian cooking is far more healthy. There is a wonderful site: www.mediterasian.com that is chock full of fabulous recipes and reasons why that style of eating is better for us. That is also the basis of The Sonoma Diet and some of what The South Beach diet is all about.

If you can cook French foods very well and can follow a recipe, then get some good cookbooks that interest you. The reason I know how to cook foods from so many different countries is that I made friends with people from other countries and asked them to SHOW me how to cook some of my favorite dishes from their part of the world. I also watch the Food Network on TV. It makes it so much easier to SEE the food being prepared as well as have the recipe. If your cable or satellite channel picks up the Food Network (also found at www.foodnetwork.com) you can pick up many ideas and recipes. Tape some of the shows. If you love to cook, as I do, you will find it entertaining and you'll enjoy trying out your new dishes. Tape the shows that interest you.

Have fun and happy cooking!!!!

PS: I just HATE to clean up the dishes!!!!

Because America is the "Melting Pot" of the world, our recipes are from all countries. Here's an example:

Chinese stir-fry = Mexican fajitas - same principle, different seasonings

Italian Noodles = Japanese noodles = chinese noodles = won ton wrappers = lumpia wrappers = pancakes - All start with basically the same ingredients when you make them from scratch. Some have rice and some have flour but the way to make them is the same.

So, I don't know what you mean by having trouble with American foods and what you refer to as American food. Steaks didn't start here - neither did Roasts, chicken, pork, etc. Sauces started in foreign countries. Gravies started in foreign countries. The foods along the southern border of America are totally different than those along the northern border - but they all came from another country to here. The only food recipes that didn't originally start here are American Indian recipes. Now a recipe may have been created here that originated in another country in another form. For instance, Almond chicken that you get in a Chinese restaurant, Chow Mein, Chop Suey - all were created in San Francisco by a Chinese cook - but they started on knowledge of that particular kind of Chinese cooking.

Brownies were a mistake off a chocolate cake. Recipes evolve and every cook with an imagination can create the most luscious meals, adding things that others hadn't thought to put together that work miracles.

Cooking, I believe starts with practice, practice, practice like everything else in life. If you just aren't interested in a particular kind of cooking - no problem - that's just a direction you would rather avoid.

I'm sure you can whip up some wonderful meals and your family appreciates all you do.

French food tastes a lot better than American food. Since there really is no "American" food, it is very hard to cook. I don't think it matters at all what your ancestry is. I'm great at cooking French food, too, and I'm not French at all.
