I don' t know what to do. I'm an older teen with no job and bad grades. I feel my life is hopless. I take pills already. And I just feel like dropping out of high school and live in my parents basement and never see the light of day. I listen to songs that make me sad. Am i hopeless?

Well, if you keep feeling sorry for yourself you will be hopeless.

Let's look at what you said; you have no job. Ok, so get one, there are jobs out there. You have bad grades. Get help at school to do better, study skills and tutoring are in every school. You have to do the work, apply yourself, make the effort and don't be lazy. You take pills. What pills? What for? Maybe that is part of the problem if they are causing you to feel this way. You want to drop out of school. Oh, that would be really a bad idea, where do you think being a drop out will get you? Nowhere fast, that's where. You listen to sad songs. So, now begin to listen to happy ones. That doesn't take too much effort, does it?

Sounds to me like you are fully enjoying this pity party you are throwing or yourself. Perhaps you need to end the party and begin to live your life. Get off your butt and make it happen, no one will do it for you.

What you are describing is called "Depression". Everybody gets it from time to time, but when it becomes an all-encompassing emotion that blocks out all others, then its a sign of a serious problem and if unchecked can result in self-destruction or suicide. The teen-suicide rate is higher than any group except for terminally ill elderly. Unfortunately, since a great deal of modern Psychiatry is based on pseudo-science and is a very very questionable branch of medicine, I balk at suggesting you get "professional" help from the Psychiatric community. After you get their bills for their application of pseudoscience, you'll be sad, depressed, lonely and flat broke. This type of help has helped some people and flat out destroyed others, or turned minor mental health problems into flat out psychosis by the administration of psychoactive drugs whose affect on the brain is largely undertermined, often with side-effects worse than the "disease" itself. But I know one thing, without somebody you can trust to lean on, and talk about this stuff, the situation can get bad fast. Some say "Depression is just an emotion, it'll pass in a few days." For somepeople, it's almost a way of life.

I actually volunteered awhile at a suicide hotline in my area. One man called on a cell phone and said "I'm standing on the 13th floor of my apartment building and I'm going to jump...and I said "I bet you $1000 bucks you are too chicken to jump! But if you do jump, you'll be dead, and I'll just have to keep my money anyway!.....meanwhile sending a coded message to the local PD. He got so mad at me for saying that, that in the time wasted in the ensuing argument about how I was the worst suicide hotline adviser he'd ever seen (obviously done this kind of thing before) , the cops had time to arrive on location and get him down!

One brilliant cop caught a woman trying to jump off the Golden Gate bridge and said "Stop or I'll shoot!" and got her down! Maybe a cop is what you need and not a shrink!
But you are definitely at the point where you need some kind of help from somebody, family member, friends, whatever, even Parents? Do they know you feel this way? They ought to..

Believe me it is worse if you drop out. Then you will face more than four years of agony. Just think you are almost out of school. Why give up now? Get your diploma and become a respected citizen and have some respect for yourself. Chin up!! Good luck. :)
