I heard that you have to be at least 17 years of age, I need to know if this is true or not?

I don't think there is a minimum age. You do need to be laid off not fired for cause or quit and to have worked several quarters.
So say you were a child actor and had been making a movie for 2 years then the project was done and you were looking for work you might get unemployment.
Most young people haven't worked long enough or are students full time so not eligible. You would need to check with your state unemployment office to see if you qualify.
For people between 16-20 getting a new job is usually quick so not out of work long enough if they really want to work.

if you are still living with parents then the age you can claim is 18, however if you are not living at home or in full time education you can claim at 16, this will not pay you full benefits but will pay you something and they will also help you find work go to www.jobcentreplus.co.uk or your nearest job centre. good luck

Legal working age, but you will have had to have lost a job, laid off or terminated.
