If you do - and I don't recommend it - you will definitely not get the same taste, texture and appearance.

You could substitute the I Can't Believe it's not butter for real butter but one thing you need to keep in mind about the substitution. If the product you are using is whipped with water, it will make a difference in texture. If it doesn't have a buttery flavor, it will impact the flavor of the cookie/cake/etc.

For instance, if you are making pie crust, the substitute won't do the same thing to make the crust light and flakey as butter will - especially if whipped with water.

But if you are making something like Banana Bread or any cake or cookie with spices in it - you'll never notice the difference. Shortbread cookies or cookies that rely on the flavor of butter to come through in the cookie (like in your recipe), you might notice the flavor is a little bland.

you can substitute a cooking margarine , but nothing thats whipped or in a tub. The margarine will taste a little different and melts at a lower temperature so the cookies will spread a little more and may be a bit softer. You can mix butter and margarine if you are needing lower fats but want the taste . Cream the butter and some sugar together and then add the margarine .

Check the container of "I can't Believe it's Not Butter" it should say something about using the product for baking. Most light butter doesn't have enough oil or fat to make your cookies taste good.
