If you tell the optometrist you are having headaches, while you're getting your eye examination, he will be able to use a little light and look at the back of your eyes.(Ophthalmoscopy) With this light, he will be able to see other things like the condition of blood vessels and will be able to give you a good clue if anything serious is going on with your headaches.

Eye diseases, such as cloudy vitreous, detached retina, optic nerve problems, macular degeneration, and changes caused by glaucoma can be detected. Diabetes, hypertension (high blood pressure), and many systemic diseases can also be detected.

Of course seeing your regular doctor would be advised.

If you describe your headaches, we can all take a guess at what is causing them. Like, how often, what area of the head, when do they happen: morning, night, or anytime. Just things like that would be helpful.

Needing a change in glasses can be a cause of headaches. There are a few other eye conditions that can cause headaches as well. That being said, the vast majority of headaches are not due to an eye problem.

Your eye doctor will not think you are an idiot if you mention the headaches. Headache is a frequent reason for people to have an eye exam and most eye doctors will even ask about headaches if you don't bring it up.

Headache is a symptom in thousands of different conditions, it is impossible to think what is causing yours. If no eye problem is found you should see your family doctor.
