How do we instill in them that having lots of expensive toys isn't always best?

I'd have to say no because we're surrounded by tonnes of new gadgets and stuff and at school it's a battle ground of who's got the best things and i see your point, but in the society we live in being materialistic isn't best but it's the one that's gonna get you furthest

I think this is difficult because even though we as adults understand the value of hard work and the dollar, we STILL want everything we see and we wish we could have better.

I think the best thing is for them to see you giving their old toys and clothing to good will or taking the items you are no longer using to the local shelter. They need to see that not everyone has a cell phone or microwave and it is not their right, but a privilege to drive a car or have all of the nice clothing they have.

All kids (generally speaking) suffer from a sense of entitlement to some degree, but you are right to want to model better choices and behaviors for them!
Good for you!

Most children do not know that money doesn't come for free. We work hard for it. What you can do is to make them work to earn money. If you tell them to mow the lawn then you give them a dollar or something like that. Once they know that they have to work hard to buy something then hopefully they realize that expensive toys aren't always the best. Whenever they ask you to buy them some expensive toys you can tell them that you will match their money. If the toy is $100.00 then they have to have $50 then you will give them $50.

You have to someway teach them that if you get everything you want, wanting something is worthless since it does not mean anything.
Show them that having everything is bad because if you want everything, there is nothing else to want.

try starting by keeping them the hell away from the TV.

>update - i see thumbs down from some morons for both me, and the person who answered directly after me in similar fashion. are you seriously stupid enough to say we're wrong in telling them to stay away from the tv? if so, feel free to join a support group for retards.

kids imitate what they see, if you set a good example and LIMIT what they have to what they Need and not just Want , they will learn and be better for it.*
