I read that Eisenhower said he would use a nuke just as you would use a bullet, but how close did the US actually get to using them against China?

Nonesense. That was not an option. It never entered into any program. Where did you get that? There was no reason to.

It got pretty close in May of 1955 when the mainland Chinese started the shelling of Quemoy and Matsu islands in the Straits of Taiwan. I believe the quote by President Eisenhower that you cited was made around the time of that crisis.

First off the USA didn't come that close to Nuclear Bombs with China. It was Russia. We literally were only gun shots away from the end of the world..................... Nuclear Fallout
