People perceive a "balanced" face as attractive. Every person has an "open" and "closed" side to their face. You will see one eye is slightly smaller than the other.Commonly, if you are right handed that will be your "open" side, but there are exceptions. If you took a straight on photo of someone and flipped one side to use two right sides or two left sides, you would see how different they would look with a balanced face. When you have a photo taken, sometimes the difference is more obvious. A good portrait photographer will use lighting and posing to balance your features for a more pleasing pictures. You will notice that people who become models have less of a difference between the two sides of their face.

In the mean time, what can you do to improve your photos? There is a cute little program, easy to operate and quite inexpensive at PortraitProfessional.com, download the free trial and see what you think.

When you know someone is going to take your picture, have them count down to when they will snap the shutter, at which time you will look toward the camera and smile. Before that, just look away from the camera. This way you will look more candid and less stiff.
