We wanted to make sure that a world war would not flare up again. We thought we had everything under control at the end of World War I, but it turned out that we didn't.

Also, the type of war fought 60 years ago was different that that of today. Back then, when a nation fought a war, it was against another nation entirely, not just another nation's army, or another nation's government.

"Winning a war" back then involved the complete devastation and reconstruction of the enemy.

"Winning a war" today involves toppling only the blatant combatants and making sure that we do everything we can to ensure that civilians are not hurt. In other words, 60 years ago, we were not as humanitarian as we are today. We showed no mercy, and rightfully so.

Tha actual decision for unconditional surrender was made at the Casablanca Conference in 1943...2 years before the war's end.

The decision was a correct one. Germany and Japan were absolute criminals as far as the war was concerned, and ONLY unconditional surrender would result in the extinction of the governments and personnel responsible for the horrors they inflicted on the world.
