Why would anyone buy a passat when for the same money you can get a tsx?

James, not sure where you get your prices.
If you go to:
http://www.vw.com/vwfeatures/passat/en/us/
the komfort is 27,000 and the lux is 29,000.
Even the low end is 23,000. but if you add on to make it = to a tsx your way up there

Its hard to compare a VW Passat to the Acura TSX. It all depends on what you are after. Speed?, Comfort? Tech toys?, Price? Name Plate?. The Passat isn't an "Entry Level Luxury" car and the Acura is. Still, the Passat has high quality interior, layout and amazing attention to detail that easily matches the Acura. It's important to note that they are about equally matched on safety. They both have a full compliment of airbags, vehicle stability control, Traction control, ABS and Break Assist features. The passat has a break drying feature that the acura doesn't wich is useful in the rain and improves stopping distance in those conditions. Passats cost of ownership is slightly lower then TSX.

Passat Pros
Low entry price with base 2.0T engine
Fast 6.9sec 0-60 Time w/ Manual (7.2sec/Auto in sport mode)
(6.1 sec 0-60 with 280hp VR6 engine/4Motion AWD)
Available All wheel drive
10 year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty
207lb-ft Torque is available at only 1800rpm!!!
Easier to chip/mod

Passat Con
$38,000 price with VR6 engine and all wheel drive combo
(Get a loaded Audi A4 2.0T Quattro for this price instead)
No Blue Tooth /No Voice activation
18" Wheel upgrade causes excessive road noise

TSX Pros
Low topend price $32,000
Cool Tech features like blue tooth and voice activation
"Luxury Branding" and sporty style

TSX Cons
5 Speed automatic compared to Passats 6 Speed close ratio automatic
Very little (164lb-ft) Torque for this kind of car
7.9 sec 0-60 time w/ manual
7 year / 70000 power train warranty
Requires premium Gas (OUCH!)

I OWN/LOVE THE 2007 PASSAT 2.0T w/TripTronic Automatic
BUT I WOULDN'T MIND DRIVING THE TSX

Review based on North American Models

My passat is chipped/modified to go 0-60 time in 6.2 sec w/ 250/HP 275lb-ft Torque. (totally uncessary but fun) "Horse power isn't everything look at your toruqe"

I assume you are talking about the Acura TSX. Personally I don't like Honda's so that's why I would not buy one. But VW's are great cars. Its all personal opinion. Its not always about speed, because there is something called a speed limit. I also like the luxury cars more than the Eco cars. Its all personal preference. I drive an Audi A6 3.0, and a Volkswagon Phaeton W12. I also have 2 performance cars that i run at a club/track. So, saying this my personal preference would be German Automobiles.

Linda C. You do know that there is a Lemon Law. Sounds like you got a Lemon, because I've never had any problems with VW. Also use a Synthetic oil, which will help with sludge.
I have several other track cars that I am working on, and none of them are Japanese.

And to repeat myself one more time Its all personal preference. :)

After having owned both Honda and VW's in my 43 years....I know this. The Passat may be cheaper off the lot but, you're gonna spend twice the difference over time with mechanical problems. Not to mention the absolutely deplorable customer service once VW has your signature on the dotted line. I have an '02 Passat in my driveway right now which I just picked up from the stealership last Saturday after having the engine replaced for the notorious "sludge issue". And...guess what, now the transmission is failing (started two days after I picked it up from VW)! Tried to trade it in yesterday and no one wants to give me more than $2K for a vehicle that still blue books at $7,000. But, the 1996 Honda which now looks like hell....still purrs when I drive it. It has never required any work but brakes, oil changes, etc. Just type "VW Passat check engine light" into your search engine and watch the internet come alive with people who have had years of problems and are out thousands of dollars. Take time to read the forums, check the nhtsa.gov website for recalls, technical service bulletins and consumer complaints on both the vehicles before you buy and compare the number a types of complaints on both. I will NEVER buy another VW and wouldn't recommend anyone else to either!!!!

Don't get a TL any older than 2004. They have transmission failure issues. But they fixed the problem with the 04 models. RSX is sporty and will not seat 4 comfortably. TSX is a nice sized sedan and is a 4 cyl. TL is more of a larger luxury sedan, but its sporty and fast. It is a 6cyl. The TSX is more like the TL then it is like the RSX. The RSX is vastly different - smaller, sportier. The TSX and TL are both sedans. The TSX is usually a better buy then the TL because it has a smaller engine. You need to drive the 3 different cars. You'll either like the RSX or you won't. The TSX and the TL will be different, too. You'll get a better idea of which of the 3 you like if you drive them.

No you can't! A VW Passat costs about $16,000 new, and an Acura TSX costs about $28,000 new!
