Jesus went to Hell to retrieve the keys of Death from the devil, restoring the power of life to the Almighty God Himself. Did you believe the adversary has the power now to kill us? No. He could only "bruise our heel." God is the only force that can give us life and TAKE IT AWAY. And Thank God He is so loving that He wants us to live, eternally!
"I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death." -- Rev 1:18

First of all what is hell. is it a place of fiery torment, no the bible teaches that hell or sheol or hades is a place of inactivity the common grave of mankind. It has been said that only the children of the Devil go to hell. But if that is true, why did Job pray that he might rest in hell? And if hell were a place just for the wicked, why would God send his Son to hell? For Jesus went to hell and was there three days. At Psalm 16:10 it was prophetically written of Jesus: “For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.” Centuries later the apostle Peter showed, at Acts 2:31, that Psalm 16:10 had its fulfillment in Jesus, that he did indeed go to hell but that God raised him up out of that condition. So hell could not be eternal.

Your using worldly sources as your basis for belief, hell is literal "the Pit" or "grave" of unconsciousness's
(Ecclesiastes 9:5) 5 For the living are conscious that they will die; but as for the dead, they are conscious of nothing at all, neither do they anymore have wages, because the remembrance of them has been forgotten.
(Ecclesiastes 3:18-21) 18 I, even I, have said in my heart with regard to the sons of mankind that the [true] God is going to select them, that they may see that they themselves are beasts. 19 For there is an eventuality as respects the sons of mankind and an eventuality as respects the beast, and they have the same eventuality. As the one dies, so the other dies; and they all have but one spirit, so that there is no superiority of the man over the beast, for everything is vanity. 20 All are going to one place. They have all come to be from the dust, and they are all returning to the dust. 21 Who is there knowing the spirit of the sons of mankind, whether it is ascending upward; and the spirit of the beast, whether it is descending downward to the earth?

Because they all made good stories . In ancient times the only communication between people was oral . The story teller was very well thought of . Stories were dreamed up , and told all over the land . The jucier, the better .
The stories that were written down became scripture .
Those were the Star Wars of ancient times .

Doesn't Jesus' being in "Sheol" for 3 days prove that hell is not a place of literal fiery torment? Hell (Sheol, Hades) is the common grave of mankind. Jesus was in the GRAVE for 3 days and then God resurrected him from the dead.
The accounts of Daniel and the 3 young men are completely different stories.

Jesus spent three days in the GRAVE! Not in a burning fire pit. And, "the dead know not any thing" (Ecclesiastes 9:5). Therefore, no one knows what it was like.
It is a common misconception that the dead go to either heaven or a burning pit called 'hell'. But that is NOT what the Bible reveals. Jesus was in 'Hades', which is a poetic way of saying he was dead and in his grave.

Peter wrote that He went to minister to the spirits in prison. He opened the barriers to those who died without benefit hearing the Gospel. This missionary work will continue under His direction so that all will have the opportunity to repent and accept the Atonement.

Why is there confusion as to what the Bible says about hell?
“Much confusion and misunderstanding has been caused through the early translators of the Bible persistently rendering the Hebrew Sheol and the Greek Hades and Gehenna by the word hell. The simple transliteration of these words by the translators of the revised editions of the Bible has not sufficed to appreciably clear up this confusion and misconception.”—The Encyclopedia Americana (1942), Vol. XIV, p. 81.
Translators have allowed their personal beliefs to color their work instead of being consistent in their rendering of the original-language words. For example: (1) The King James Version rendered she’ohl′ as “hell,” “the grave,” and “the pit”; hai′des is therein rendered both “hell” and “grave”; ge′en·na is also translated “hell.” (2) Today’s English Version transliterates hai′des as “Hades” and also renders it as “hell” and “the world of the dead.” But besides rendering “hell” from hai′des it uses that same translation for ge′en·na. (3) The Jerusalem Bible transliterates hai′des six times, but in other passages it translates it as “hell” and as “the underworld.” It also translates ge′en·na as “hell,” as it does hai′des in two instances. Thus the exact meanings of the original-language words have been obscured.
What does the Bible say the penalty for sin is?
Rom. 6:23: “The wages sin pays is death.”
After one’s death, is he still subject to further punishment for his sins?
Rom. 6:7: “He who has died has been acquitted from his sin.”
Is eternal torment of the wicked compatible with God’s personality?
Jer. 7:31: “They [apostate Judeans] have built the high places of Topheth, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, in order to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, a thing that I had not commanded and that had not come up into my heart.” (If it never came into God’s heart, surely he does not have and use such a thing on a larger scale.)
Illustration: What would you think of a parent who held his child’s hand over a fire to punish the child for wrongdoing? “God is love.” (1 John 4:8) Would he do what no right-minded human parent would do? Certainly not!

Up until the time of Jesus' death the devil still had access to heaven so he could go to God and be the accuser (tattle tell) about the sins the human race was committing. After Jesus went to hell and defeated the devil he no longer has access to heaven and God. That is why the devil is now here on earth and does every thing he can to tempt us not to obey God's teachings.

He went to get all the good people who were there before he was born. He took plenty of ice tea and water to avoid getting thirsty. And he's Jesus. He just made some cool wind and everyone was glad.
