He should not be pope.

Yes, the pope sins. The Bible says that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. I don't know how close the pope is to God. Some people are closer to God than others, but it has to do with the heart and not which position a person holds. He is no better than the rest of the people. He simply holds a position of more significance than other people.

The Catholic Church teaches that the Pope is infallible at closely defined times.

The Pope is only infallible when he, in union with the body of bishops, solemnly teaches that a doctrine as true. This is called "ex cathedra", literally meaning in Latin "from the chair".

This comes from the words of Jesus to Peter (the first Pope) and the Apostles (the first bishops), "Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven" (Matthew 18:18) and "He who hears you hears me" (Luke 10:16).

At all other times the Pope can be just as wrong or sinful as you and me and be in need of forgiveness.

With love in Christ.

The pope is human just like every other human being. He is sinful and does sin. He is no better then anyone else. He is just in a postion of leadership. Just as a president or someones boss it is just a title. God is no respecter of persons. He sees us as all the same.
Anyone can become close to God simply by praying and reading the bible. You build a relationship with God the same way you build a relationship with anybody else, by spending time with them.

Humans sin. The Pope is human. Therefore he sins. He is closer to God because he prays more. Jesus said that we should all be perfect. That means that we can be perfect. To accomplish this seemingly impossible task, we must ask the Holy Spirit to help us in all situations to be perfect. You, the Pope and I must strive to be better. We do not have to do this. Active Christians want to be completely in God's will.

Of course he sins. I don't know about the current Pope, but I read one time that John Paul II received the sacrament of reconciliation daily.

As to your thoughts on him being closer to God or being better than the rest of the people, this is a clear misconception that you have. There is nothing about being Pope that makes one closer to God or better than people. Of course it makes sense to elect a Pope who lives out the Gospel message, which means he is close to God, but we all can live close to God.

The Pope of Europe sins (aka fibs) to save Rome lawsuit money due to child crimes.

The Pope who approves of child crimes is not close to God at all; the Pope is close to the devil.

The European Pope is a politician and an authoritarian.

Ideally, the Pope would be a person to be admired; however, some Popes have the moral standards of Sicilian Godfathers (aka no morals) vs other Popes who have moral standards of some sort.

The current Pope has said all USA Protestants go to hell so he fits the model of a godless Sicilian Godfather (aka no morals at all) it seems to me.

Yes, the Pope can sin. But he's still positionally closer to God, just as the local Sheriff, who represents the Law, is closer to government than most.

I'm not a Christian, but I can tell you that Herr Ratzinger is no bastion of righteousness. He's a scoundrel and it doesn't take much research to find out why. Just do a web search for pope benedict child molestation and you'll see who you're dealing with. Domine domine domine. You're a catholic now.
