I am 17 and my boyfriend is 18. We have been together for almost three years. We have ultimately decided that now is not the time for us to have sex, mostly we want to make sure that when we have sex, we are being as safe as we possibly can, meaning using both the pill and a condom. Since asking my mother to put me on the pill is simply not an option for me, we've decided to wait until I'm 18. We've also decided to wait until we've been in college for a while and we know that a long distance relationship is going to work out.

I guess I just want to hear other peoples opinions on the issue. Why did you decide to have sex? Did you rationally talk it out first, like my boyfring and I did? Or, why did you decide not to have sex? I'm not trying to judge or be critical to anyone. I'm just curious about others rational behing making such and important decision.

Wow. I spelled "boyfriend" wrong. I guess I should have looked over it a little better...

Congratulations on being more mature than many of your contemporaries. Many adults cannot talk to each other that frankly about what they want, especially when the subject is sex.

I had sex with the first person who was willing to have sex with me. That turned out to be 19. No we didn't have a frank discussion about it beforehand, it just kind of happened.

I think that you have a perfectly good rationale about what you want your first time to be. I say go for what you have already decided. It is the right decision for you, because you made it.

I met my boyfriend when I was 14. I instantly knew that he was the one for me, although he was 7 years older than me. We were very lovey dovey and when I was I was 15 it just happened. We never talked about it or planned anything out. We used a condom but I was not on the pill. After a few months of being sexually active, I became pregnant. Wow! It was unexpected. Don't get me wrong I wouldn't trade it for anything but it hit me like a ton of bricks. I am now 20 and have been married to him for 3 and 1/2 years and also have a new 4 month old. You just have to be ready and know that you want it!!

So many sex ads everywhere that teens are now doing sex early because parents don't/don't care have the time to teach their kids at home about how sex early is bad and you might have a baby at a young age. I decided not to have sex because well, who wants to take care of a baby when your like 13 - 17? Teens should have fun and even though they are going through puberty and think about sex doesn't mean they should do it. Just this generation is so messed up.

kudos to the both of you. i'm sure it's not easy for you especially considering you've been together for such a long time. i think it's safe to say that when most people have sex for the first time there's not a long drawn out conversation about it. i know at least in my case. you just have to do what's right for you and when it actually feels right to you. who's to judge how someone else lives their life..

You are one of the few teens I've seen exhibit any level of maturity and common sense when it comes to sex. You both deserve praise for the decision you've made. It might be hard to resist, but in the long run, you'll see that you both did the right thing by waiting.

Edit: I have to agree with Kate, too.
