Written invitations aren't a good idea because you're throwing the party yourself. Stick to the idea that it's just a get together. Pizza is fine... a caterer would be a bit over the top. You don't need a theme, unless you think it would be fun (like an Italian food night, a costume party, etc.)

Calls will work just fine. It sounds informal so calls can be fine.
Subways sandwiches are best because they can sit out for awhile and still be fine. They don't get cold or bad after an hour sitting out. Also they can be manipulated so people can make what they want to be happy. Last, if anybody is watching their weight, (and with 20 people, somebody is) subway sandwiches are the best way to help people with that.
IT does not need to have a theme. But you do need to have things for people to do so they won't be bored.

You could call or do an e-mail invitation if it's a casual gathering. I think you could definitely do pizza and some snacks and cookies or a cake. No, no theme necessary. It's your birthday and that is theme enough!

it all depends on how u want it to be.. do u want it to be a all out party with your friends, or do you want it to be a 'grown up' dinner party. with the basic party subway and pizza or what not is fine so is the calling and only do a theam if u want to.. with the 'grown up' party calling is also fine and if u can cook i would if not catering would be best, and again no theme is nessary.
