Both non-profit religions, Islam and European Catholicism, are authoritarian.

Should all Catholics, both women and men, 18 years and older be allowed to vote for the next Pope of Rome?

This is the year 2007 AD, not 2007 BC, isn't it? Rome has heard of the idea of western democracies, hasn't it?

There shouldn't be a pope. No religious person deserves that much power and glory.

The Catholic Church is theocracy, not a democracy.

God selects our earthly leaders. God determines our beliefs.

We fully acknowledge that God is wiser than we are and we accept God's will in the matter.

Our leaders and beliefs are based upon wisdom and truth, not based on politics, emotions, fads, or popular opinion.

A Papal Conclave works like this:

+ A pope dies and is buried

+ The cardinals come to Rome for the conclave that will elect the new pope. The word conclave (Latin, *** + clavis, literally, "locked with the key") designates:
. • The place in a locked section of the Vatican where the cardinals elect a new pope.
. • The actual gathering of the cardinals.

+ The conclave begins 15 to 20 days after the pope's death.

+ The cardinals pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit during a Mass

+ The cardinals, sealed in the Sistine Chapel, vote every morning and afternoon.

+ A two-thirds majority plus one is required for election for the first 30 ballots. After that, a simple majority is required.

+ After each vote, they burn the ballots and add special chemicals to make the smoke white or black.
. • Black smoke means no new pope yet.
. • White smoke announces the election of a new pope.

+ The cardinals may elect any baptized male they wish. There have been occasions in the past where they have elected a layman. After their election, the layman has to be ordained priest and bishop.

+ They ask the one elected if he accepts. The moment he accepts, he is pope.

+ The pope chooses his “Papal” name.

+ Then the new pope is announced to the world.

The papal election is not a popular election. It's not like all the men get to vote, either.

Catholicism is not a democracy. It's a theocracy. Democratic rules are good for governments, not for churches. If all religions were led by popular rule, people would be very self-serving and not very godly.

I was of the understanding that the pope was elected only by the college of cardinals (i.e., the group from which the pope was chosen), not by the general catholic population. It is not at all like a regular governmental institution.

The problem is not HOW the pope is elected, but that there is a pope at all. The Vatican is responsible for so much death and hatred that I can't imagine why catholics keep the organization around.

Nope. it extremely isn't the way it works. as wellness Catholic is added approximately via Baptism, extremely regularly toddler baptism, additionally lots of Catholics are lapsed and don't prepare the religion or perhaps have faith in God. The council of Bishops although, is created from Catholic priests that have gone via extensive submit-secondary practise in theology, psychology and philosophy, they have committed their lives to the church as recommended adults having taken on Holy Orders.. they are the shepherds that lead the flock.

Yes they should. Women are equal and should be treated so in all things, including voting for another pope (even though I'm not religious).
