I have two dogs, a male bichon and a female maltese
I have a queen size bed that only I and them sleep in, however, they insist on sleeping either on top of me or on top of each other
My maltese generally likes to sleep in my face on my pillow or draped over my chest with her ear to my heart
My male bichon likes to lay on my stomach or shoulder.
Some nights I'm crunched between the two, or have both of them in my face breathing all over my neck
It's very funny and cute most of the time, but with all the space on the bed, why do they enjoy doing this so much?

I forgot to mention that when I'm not home they sleep on top of each other and won't go to sleep otherwise

In the pack, dogs would sleep together for both protection and warmth.

With the human pack, it's instinctive. While the dog may not need the warmth in a climate-controlled home, the 'pack instinct' may still be strong. Both my present and previous SAR partners were extremely close to me and slept on the bed, but always with their back up against me (pack instinct, watching for danger).

I've some hearing damage, so I don't hear light sounds. It's a real comfort to know when I'm asleep that my partner not only has my back, but my ears as well!

Perhaps for warmth. I know that now that it is getting cold, one of my dogs with not so much hair likes to cuddle all the time. He curls up as close as possible to me or the other dog (he's over 90 pounds now...so thank goodness he doesn't try to lay on top of me!)

My two Daschunds do this too. They are both females and any time they sleep you couldn't fit a credit card between them. I think it is simply for warmth, but also affection. Just enjoy the love!

They need to feel the body heat of you or their friend as it's a lot to do with a feeling of security! :) I have 3 dogs & all 3 have to be around me somewhere.. makes for a very uncomfy sleep whenever they decide to all position around me.
