You can install other operating systems on the ps3 such as linyx yellow dog. What it means is that you can run using your ps3 Operating system and all it offers and then if you choose to go to the second OS on your system you can and exploit those features as well.

Apart from gaming it's a good multimedia player with LAN support, Blu-ray player, standard DVD player, MP3 and ATRAC supported.
You can install other OS (almost any Linux can be installed). Yellow Dog designed for PS3 - it's easier to install it, than others. On top of Linux you can install Win XP, but it's pretty much useless, you won't be able to play games (DirectX isn't supported) and it'll run very slow.

You can get Linux Yellow Dog for the PS3. Just google it, it's free.
I believe Linux Fedora will also run, and their are rumors that Mac OSX could run, but I've never seen that confirmed (it probably doesn't run very well).

The "other OS" feature lets you use your PS3 like a regular computer. You could install linux and put Mozilla on it for better internet browsing, for example.
