Hey James Dean, it's me again...remember what I wrote about Washington, DC. Well, lucky you (lol), 'cause my husband and I moved to NYC right after he graduated college and was offered a job by At&t in NYC. O.K., here goes, first of all it is even more expensive than DC and of course the buildings are taller (No building in DC is over ...I think 12 floors high). The advantage of NYC (I think) would be the opportunities for show business (or any other endeavor) and/or the ability to meet people in show business. There are even more people crowded into a block than there are in DC. NYC is more fast paced than DC and the people tend to be somewhat rude, whereas people in DC are rather friendly and more laid back (not lazy though); you know how slowly the government gets things done. Central Park in NYC is cool but it's about the only place to be able to breath a bit of fresh air. In DC there's more space and greenery. But, I'm not coming down on NYC 'cause "if you can make it there you can make it anywhere"...as Frank Sinatra used to sing and I'm sure that's true. So, if you don't mind being a small fish in a big pond then New York is the place for you....at least at first you will be a small fish, who knows...maybe you'll be a big fish in a big pond someday. Whatever, it's better than being a small fish in a small pond if you know what I mean. Living and growing in NYC will definitely add sophistication to your style. Both places are highly multicultural so which ever one you choose you will have that advantage. Why not take a short trip to each place and see how you like it in person. A place has to have the right "feel" to it and that is a personal thing, so nobody can make the final decision but you. Let us know how you're doing and which place you choose, O.K.

I live in DC and sometimes wish I lived in NYC.
Transport: DC Metro actually opened in 1976 with a very limited line, which has since expanded to five lines in a silly hub-and-spoke system. There really are no lines that go suburb to suburb without going into DC. Because there were no extra tracks built, if there's maintenance being done or an emergency, it means single-tracking, which causes delays. The NYC subway runs 24 hours a day and has extra tracks with which to bypass trouble areas, while Metro has to shut down for maintenance because it doesn't. NYC subway is dirtier, but then it is over 100 years old. Metro's big advantage is the flashing lights at the platform edges that let you know a train is coming and the relatively new signs that indicate how long one has to wait for a train. It also has escalators in every station, really a necessity considering how deep some of the stations are. On DC Metro, though, you typically have to use two or three escalators just to get to one train and another two or three to exit the station.
In NYC, it seems the doors usually open on the right side of the train, so you have to go to a specific platform. In DC, many of the stations are designed so the doors open on the left. NYC is a flat fare to ride, while Metro is based by distance and time of day traveled (more expensive during the weekday rush hours). Metro stations were designed to discourage crime with few places for miscreants to hide. Metro also does not allow eating and drinking on trains or in stations.
NYC has better restaurants in my view, but I don't go hungry in DC. NYC is also more expensive to live. DC charges 10 percent tax for restaurant meals, while NYC charges less (I'm not sure of the percentage).
DC is definitely cleaner.

In terms of living....New York City hands down! Washington D.C. traffic makes NYC traffic look like Albany in comparison.
I would think educationally NYC and DC are at par.
Even though Washington's Metrorail subway system is cleaner and a lot nicer looking...do realize, it was opened sometime in 1980 (which would account for the newness) and only has 5 lines to which NONE of them run express. The NYC system has been in operation since 1904 and has MUCH MORE lines than DC...the majority of them were DELIBERATELY made for express runs. It may look beat up and dirty...but let's see how DC's system holds up in 2083.
And while crime in NYC, which is a whole lot LARGER, has continutally been dropping, DC crime rates have actually been rising!
