Generally, clockwise. It will only turn in 1 direction. When you turn it and smell or hear gas, it's on.

If its a newer quarter turn type gass valve with a 4 inch or so silver handle with a red tip on one end or a 2-3 inch long red handle, its on when the handle is parallel to the incoming gas pipe lengthwise. If its an older, screw valve, it actually opoens counterclockwise (as in unscrewing the cap on a jar) and closes when screwed down (clockwise as in closing a jar).

try both ways. You should hear it "hissing" or smell when you turn it the correct way. Don't leave it turned on for more than a second or two though without a flame
