Guinea pig: Usually more cuddly than hamster, larger, needs spacious cage, daily source of Vit. C, fresh produce daily. Longhaired types need regular grooming. They are very vocal & have an interesting range of sounds. They live considerably longer than hamsters do & are social animals so it's good to have more than 1 if possible, as well as daily interaction with humans. I've *never* seen one asleep, so they're apparently very light sleepers & wake up @ the sound of an approaching footstep.
Hamster: Much smaller, especially the dwarf breeds. Can be tempermental/nippy. Have cheek pouches to help them carry food to nest area. Don't require a huge cage but it should be comfortably large & have an exercise wheel, which most hamsters enjoy. I've never lived with a longhaired hamster so I don't know if they need special grooming. Quiet except for squeaking, which they only do if frightened, annoyed, hurt or something else is wrong. Most types are solitary so should be kept alone. If their wheel is noisy, they can keep you awake half the night. They are fairly deep sleepers & should *not* be disturbed suddenly. They usually only live a couple of years.
Both: Cute, available in lots of colors & fur types. Fairly easy to care for but do need regular attention. Require weekly cage-cleaning, usually with spot-cleaning in between. Teeth grow continually so it's good to give them lots of chew toys & hard treats to gnaw.
