He can't sleep at night, because the fundamentalists keep telling him "God is going to get you". And if God is everywhere, then He must be under his bed.

Can't do it, sorry.

If God is everywhere then he is under the bed too.
It is unfortunate that someone has made it seem like a bad thing to be gotten.

I think it is better he think of God as a protector not a demon.
Maybe you can play along with the fantasy and make it like G being under the bed makes it a flying carpet and protects him from any monsters.
Just share with your son your beliefs about G and that what you believe is more important than what those other people believe.

Whenever I see in my mail, "8TractMind has asked a question on Yahoo, do you have the answer?," I feel a thrill, but at the same time I feel I am stepping into a field of land mines. Why is that, Son? Do not make the mistake of demonizing what you do not believe to your son, as that would make it worse. Just because you do not believe in God does not mean you will have no spiritual explanations to make to a bright young mind. A night light, and a routine "buddy system" check of closets and under the bed before turning in is usually enough to eventually rid your child of "night terrors." It is a medical term, and boys are more likely to suffer than girls. Look up "night terrors."

Here's what you do:

Get a spray bottle and fill it with water that you have added a little(not too much) food colouring to. Tell your son that you went to WalMart(how ironic!) and bought this bottle of "God Repellent". Your son can safely spray under his bed every night to keep God away and rest in peace. Refill the bottle as necessary.

When my daughter was afraid of The Monster Bear (too much Bear in the Big Blue House at an early age) we explained to her that the reason he was under the bed was to watch over her and protect her. Telling her that he wasn't there was going nowhere.

"He" even left her gifts on special occasions with notes from The Monster Bear. For years after that, she always knew he was protecting her.

I was working at the Orono Campus of U Maine one summer when I came upon one of the teen summer program kids crying on the library steps. She was about fifteen. She said a fundamentalist minister on campus told her she and her family would go to Hell because they are Catholics. I reminded the man of his first amendment rights which I totally respected, but added that I didn't think he "would know Jesus if you were giving him a b...j... in Exxon station men's room!" That felt good. Someone in charge spoke to me about it, but they had a hard time looking particularly angry.

put his mattress on the floor and tell him god is really too chubby to fit under there

or, you could tell him that god is too busy in the Midwest, confusing more and more gullible brainwashed intellectually challenged people into giving money to this preposterous notion that there is a god.

that confuses them every time.
