My fiance's daughter just turned 9 a week ago. Yesterday she told me she found blood in her underwear, so I know she has her period. She is also getting boobs! Today she wore a shirt and they are totally noticeable. I pulled her aside and asked if I could take her bra shopping, she said no. Her mom died 4 years ago, so I asked if she wanted her Grandma to take her or one of her aunts or a friend's mom. And she said no again. She said she doesn't want a bra, but she needs one! She doesn't have the problem with pads, she was very good about those. Help! She needs a bra and I want her to get one so she won't be teased at school. I don't mind if I don't take her, but I want her to take someone she can trust there.

I mentioned her Dad and she said: "He wouldn't know the first thing about a bra!"

Maybe break her into the idea of a bra first-there are plenty of "bra style" sports tops that would do at this stage and would not make her feel like she stands out from all her friends. Another way is to take her shopping with you to go pick a bra out for yourself and let her see the pretty designs and that it is really not that big of a deal and can actually be fun! This is a hard time for a girl at the best of times let alone when she has lost her mother so just keep on being supportive and caring and she will soon come around-Good Luck :)

I remember I didn't wear a bra until I was 11. My mom tried to make me, and then she had my aunt talk to me and I was SO embarrassed--I still remember it 20 years later! If she won't wear a bra, see if she will wear a tank top or something under her shirts, or the tank tops with the built in bra. She will when her friends start wearing them. They probably will start soon since kids are developing earlier these days!

Have her father tell her that she really needs to wear a bra now that she is developing into a young lady. Have him tell her that she can choose who she would like to take her bra shopping. Have him tell her that its important for her to wear it for her back and to make sure they don't grow to look like they are an old ladys. It may just be adjusting to having to wear such a thing. If she isn't already wearing deodorant this is a good time to start that into her life as well.

Maybe talk to her dad about it, would she rather talk to him about getting one, or knowing its okay to wear one?

Or maybe talk to her gramma about it. Maybe she can explain to her why its important.

She doesn`t need a bra just because you think so. If she gets teased at school, she will come to you and ask for one. She said no and that means NO.
