Amazing....haha, love the "English" accent part, since we all speak "English"...in the South in the US, depending on "what neck of the woods" you come from some are barely understandable, same goes for NY, Midwest etc......so "British or English" is basically another "accent" I have an English mum, American dad and was raised as a young child in England & the US then shipped off to the US for boarding school in the 8th grade and then University, so I actually have no accent...I have the "terminology" of both countrys...so depending on what I say sometimes gets me the odd look and people think me daft....so now after this convoluded answer...lol...think I shall undertake the task of "food shopping" and the much dreaded "trolley" while unsupervised children run amuck while the parents stand idly by....lol...if I have not made any sense what-so-ever, oh well...lol.....however I do prefer the "proper English" of my mum.......Cheers

Speaking in an English accent is merely a way of someone pointing out that you speak like a person from England rather than another part of the world that speaks English.
Of course we have an English accent, everybody has some kind of accent - it's the way we speak, I don't see why that's offensive.

I was talking about this with my friend just the other day. I find it funny coz English derived from England thus English. So Americans are really the ones with the accent. But since you were visiting the U.S and as it happens it was filled with Americans with American accents, you were sought as the person with the "accent". BTW I'm not English. And I do find men with British "accents" cute:) It's cool!

The same happened to me in Niagara . I have a slight Liverpool accent (most people from the South just think I come from somewhere up North. I speak with anything but an upper middle class accent usually used in films

It's not an accusation it's true! I have a Lancashire Accent though I don't live in Lancashire any more it's now called Cumbria!
Still think of myself as a Lancashire Lassie though!
Very annoying when someone from South of Birmingham asks, 'Where abouts in Yorkshire are you from?'
Forgive my ignorance here but what would you expect an American in America to have.............. a Scottish accent?

i'd bet that the person only meant it as a compliment, and unless someone came up to you and said "dude, your accent is stupid" you have nothing to worry about. if someone told me that anything about me was cute, i wouldn't take offense. ;)
when you're in a country different to your own, you have the accent. when someone is visiting your country, they have the accent.
probably not an answer you were looking for, but just giving my two cents as a girl with an extremely british family living in america. :)
cheers!

Christ, not more of this shite.
No wonder you whine about people whining about you and "hating" you with petty racist drivel like this.
What is an english accent anyway?
Cockney?
Mancunian?
Geordie?
Lancashire?
Yorkshire?
They're all different? So which one's *the* "english" accent.
And which one's "American"
Californian?
New York?
Virginian?
Texan?
Which one is the definitive "american" accent.
Gimme a break. Only a close minded bigot could turn a compliment in to an excuse to abuse someone.
