I am very worried. I work in a small office with about 10 other people. Myself and few others have Windows XP and the rest of the staff have Windows 2000. XP offers regular updates. Recently XP offered me updates and I said yes. Since then the Windows 2000 users computers have stopped working properly. We are all linked to one server but surely the update would only affect my PC wouldn't it? They were processing orders through a program called Crystal Reports. They can still process the orders but now cannot print them, although they can still print emails etc. I need to know 1. Can accepting updates affect other PC'S? 2. If it has can it be fixed? 3. If I was to remove recent updates would things improve? 4. How do I remove updates? and 5. Will anyone know it was me?
I really didn't mean to do any harm. I thought accepting the updates was the correct thing to do.

Hard to say. If the updates came from the official Windows Update site then there's nothing you and that update could have done that would have caused this.

If however, you just saw a pop up that said update and you did then things are a little more difficult.

That said, it is doubtful that anything you could have done would have affected other machines on the server.

I would put this down to merely coincedence and not worry yourself about it.

If the update caused the issue, you have other problems. Accepting updates is the thing to do. Like with any other updates (hardware, software, etc) things may indeed show up that were not being shown before.

No your accepting updates does NOT AFFECT other machines. If the printer is on your machine then possibly but not likely. Without knowing the network setup this is really difficult to answer. (Like what machine is the printer connected into, on what machine is Crystal Reports loaded, etc.) There are reasons.

You can roll back updates, just click on the windows update on your computer and you will see there is a way to remove them, You can also remove them from the "Add Remove Programs" in your control panel. (That isn;t the best way to fix your issue.)

Finding out what changed and why it is affecting the system is the correct method to "fix" your problem. There are updates for Win2K also! The machines running Windows 2000 may also need updates! These generally are related to system security issues. So before doing anything take a look at what changed! Does Crystal need an update? Does the printer driver need an update? Did the update change your "Network Settings"? (May be a good thing may not be) What software is the "server" running, it may need updates as well!
What firewall software is running, what antivirus, the list goes on.

Too many items can cause your issue, you may have found a real security issue with your network that needs to be corrected. So ONLY ROLL BACK as a last resort.

One word of advice, you really should try NOT to mix operating systems within a small network. It always causes issues somewhere, sometime.

Let your IT boys work this one out, though for the life of me where do you find people still running Windows 2000? I can't imagine that a machine set up that long ago can still be any use as a business machine. Your employer should be doing everything they can to get their network to run properly and smoothly it is not down to employees to worry about this stuff. When I am at work I automatically accept any updates when I shut my machine down. If they were to cause harm to other users of the 800 strong network (with about 1,650 users it is a very big secondary school).then that would not be my fault but that of the IT Support department.

It should not affect other computers...Maybe server had some automated windows update that break the crystal program.

To undo update, go to start>setting>control panel> add & remove program. Remember to tick "show update", select last update and press remove button.
