How to make a magnet?

Question

I would like to make a permanent magnet (Neodymium). So anyone there can give me informations on how to make it? This is because I don't know at all how magnets are made besides electromagnet. I've done electromagnet before, but now want to try something different. Thanks.

The first answer does not provide nearly enough info. If you really want to make your own permanent magnet, you need some very sophisticated technology or you need to scale back on your goal. Nd magnets, specifically Nd2Fe14B composition, is the strongest permanent magnet material known. Nd metal is very reactive, if you tried to melt it in air, it would burn into Nd oxide/nitride and would not help. Even if you we able to melt and cast the correct composition of NdFeB in a vacuum, you can not acheive the high magnetic strength unless the molten alloy is solidified VERY rapidly. The next strongest magnet material is SmCo. Sm is another rare earth element and very reactive so there are similar challenges.

Your best bet is to magnetize a piece of Fe or steel. Most steel nails are not magnetized. If you place them next to a permanent magnet, they will become magnetized and be a "permanent" magnet although a very weak one.

I do not mean to discourage you but making very strong permanent magnets is very complicated. good luck

Get molten Neodymium (heat it up really really really hot) and let it cool is a strong magnetic field (like one created by an electromagnet).

But you'll need to go up to somewhere around 1875 °F - so unless you have a extremely hot furnace - you'll just have to buy already magnetized Neodymium.
