I know I could remove the door and have it stripped professionally but it's not practical. I have come across laquer and varnish removers but can't find a wax stripper - so far!
Thanks!

FACT Methylated spirit will NOT dissolve wax.
A wax solvent would be petroleum based like petrol paraffin etc.
Personally I would go for white spirit which is less hazardous than petrol which is not permitted indoors anyway.
After swabbing with rag soaked in the stuff , dry with cotton cloth. Obtain a can of " STOPPING ", and paint on the entire door, allow to dry.
Next day apply water based acrylic undercoat, followed by another undercoat, then a final coat of normal gloss or eggshell.
" Stopping " is methylated based lacquer which acts as an insulator.
Water based undercoat will not react with "stopping" and will have good coverage.
This method works because of basic science, not rocket science.

If it's been waxed onto bare wood it may be hard to remove.
Try white spirit if no good you will have to use Nitromors Varnish Stripper which takes out wax as well

Wash down the door thoroughly with Sugar Soap using wire-wool, making sure you go with the grain of the wood, rinse off and make sure the door is completely dry before coating it with paint.
