“The idea of limbo conjures up the image of God as some kind of government bureaucrat who says to people, not just babies, ‘Sorry, you don’t have your passport stamped with baptism, you’ll have to wait over there’."

St. Peter's like the guys at Ellis Island.

EDIT: Apparently the Church is wealthy enough to afford the abuse claims and still do doctrinal work.

Hello,

1) Limbo was never taught as a biblical teaching in the Catholic church; it was always just a theory.

2) The fiddle did not exist in Nero's time. Also in reality, Nero was in Rome directing the fire fighters.

3) I was an altar boy for 10 years and never saw any kind of abuse myself but since I need to put about 10 k into my house to renovate the floors I best try to come up with a story that Father Riley ( long gone) touched me where he shouldn't have... get some of the pie!

Cheers,

No.

The Church has pondered the suggestion of Limbo for a few hundred years and has decided that it is not a good idea. Limbo was never official doctrine.

Jesus said, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation. He who believes and is baptized will be saved." (Mark 16:15-16)

For centuries, people have wondered about children who died before they were baptized. The Bible does not explicitly state that they will go to heaven.

Limbo was suggested as the place where unbaptized babies went when they died. This idea was never official Church doctrine and has been rejected.

The Church now says that it is not sure what happens to unbaptized babies when they die but she entrusts them to the mercy of God.

I would think that Sola Scripura Christians would welcome this decision instead of using it to attack us.

With love in Christ.

The Catholic church can't "rescind" limbo, as it never adapted the idea as a doctrine in the first place. What it can do, however, is decide this idea is wrong, which it apparently has.

Is nothing sacred? Is purgatory next? Have they established the boundry yet between hades, hell, sheol, eternal damnation and heck?

What a tangled web we weave when we start to construct explanation upon explanation for what is essentially an irrational belief system. Where now do those who were never exposed to Christ go? How about those born before Christ? How about those who lead decent lives but don't accept Christ (e.g. Gahndi). We already "know" those who live damnable lives but repent go to heaven (e.g. Hitler)
