If something goes wrong during take off and landing (the most dangerous part of a flight) and they have to evacuate everybody, there is a chance that you would not hear and still be rocking to your music. If you are in a aisle seat, you could be preventing someone from getting past you.
Why does it IGNORE you (that sentence does not make sense). And it is flight rules - not fight rules.

I'm glad it ignores you. I was going to also, but I thought I would answer the question. Some electronic devices do interfere with the signals going to the electronically operated controls of the aircraft. It is also ,as someone else said, a safety issue. You need to be aware of what is happening especially during takeoff and landing. It is a minor inconvenience....get over it.

OK. Most of the answers arent correct.
Imagine this. Something happens during the takeoff or landing run. The plane is slow and low. You may need to abort the takeoff, or make a forced landing. It is important for you to be aware of youre surrondings and know what is happing. If youre listining to music I doubt youll be aware. Same reason for raising the blinds.

Read the F.C.C regs. for electronic equipment it says that all eq should not give out a signal that interfere with others and that that device must except all signals that could interfere with other devices...
The reason is that they do not want your device to except a signal that is intended for the pilot or some other device on the plain....
In other words you do not need to know what is going on in the cot pit of the plain... so just turn it off for the 5 min. and enjoy the rest of the flight with your rock and rool.....

It is for safety reasons as if something bad happens during take off or landing you won't have time to be fumbling with electronic gear and you need to be able to hear instructions.

all these responses sound good, but are not all true..
Reason is this..
Commerical Airlines operatate on an IFR flight plan.
FAR's state that no person on board may operate any electronic device while flying under IFR, unless the pilot has determined that the device will not cause interference with the radios/ nav equipment.
This is why the let you turn them on when they are cruising, because the Pilot in command determined that it will not interfere with the a/c equimpent.
Also they wany you listening to the prefight breifing about seatbelts, exits, no smoking..

first off, it ANNOYS you not ignores you, but it's because supposedly radio waves set off by music players(some cd/mp3 players have tuners in them), cell phones laptops, etc interfear with the plane's equipment.
