but cannibalism is not unheard of...depends on the species

some animals ingest their mate after mating. In a definite sort of spider, the male injects the female with its sperm, its reproductive section breaks off and it tumbles into the girls mouth and is eaten. this would not ensue continuously interior of that species of spider, even though it does ensue and would help in reproductive fulfillment.
