I am a senior in high school, and have been applying for scholarships and colleges like crazy. Everytime I come upon a scholarship that asks for my SSN, I cringe. I have heard so many horror stories about identity theft that I just want to make sure it is safe. Is it safe to enter your SSN online for scholarships and college applications?

www.firefox.com

if you're afraid of entering your ssn, download firefox and use that for your browser. it is immune to most internet explorer viruses, and even has a special block for things like fake pages that send your information to other people. If it is a fake, firefox will tell you not to enter your information. I find this is the safest way. Plus using norton, or mcaffee online security helps a lot. So long as it is a respected college you should be fine anyway. just go directly from the colleges website, do NOT search it on yahoo or google, and go from there. type in the actual college website in your browser by hand.

If they use a http ending, it means it does not provide a secure transmission of your personal information in most cases. https means that has a secure transmission which encodes the information before sending it to the place. Unfortunately, the SSN is needed to report if you are selected to receive a scholarship because agencies or organizations are required to report earnings over $600.
