Three men checked into a hotel room for which they paid $30. The next day, the manager realized that the men had been overcharged. She gave the bellhop $5 to return to the three men. On the way to their room the bellhop decided to keep $2 for himself, and give each of the three men one dollar. The three men had now paid $9 each, or a total of $27. This plus the $2 the bellhop kept makes a total of $29. What happened to the other dollar?

there is no other doller the maths was done wrong.
The manger has $30 and gives $5 of that to the bellhop to return to the men: $30 - $5 = $25.
The bellboy decides to keep $2 for himself: $5 - $2 = $3.
The men each end up with $1 each. Total it up: (3 x $1) + $2 + $25 = $30.

Sure. If the manager refunded $5, then the total cost was now $25 which would be $8.33 each, not $9.00. So there is no extra dollar. The bellhop kept $2, each man got back $1 and the cost of the room was $25. $2+3+25=$30.

With $5 dollar refund, three men would have paid a net amount of $25,Out of refund of $5 dollars, bellhop kept $2 dollars and returned to them $3.Thus,it's total is= 25+3+2=$30.No confusion now?

Nothing! It's one of those strange things about the way it is added. If added sequentially it looks like this: The hotel collected $25, the three men were each given $1 back, and the bellhop kept the other $2. The total now comes to $30.

The problem must be solved in this way. three men originally paid $30 totally. $5 were to be returned by the manager. so they would have paid only $8.33 (total of $25). the bellhop has returned $3 and so it adds upto $28 plus $2 (with the bellhop) and hence totals to $30. is it ok.

This is a trick of words. What throws people is the bit where it says 'the men had now payed $9 each' which isnt true. They had LOST $9 each but the manager only received $8.33 from each of them. £8.33 times 3 is $25. Plus the $3 they were refunded, plus the $2 the bellhop kept makes 30.

You did he math wrong. So you have $30. You subract $5, and get $25. The bellhop takes $2 and distributes the other $3 evenly among the men.
(30-5)+(2+3)=30
There is no other dollar

There is no missing dollar. The room renters have paid out a total of $27 and there is $27 in receipts, $25 are with the hotel manager and $2 are with the bellhop.
