Any animal can be friends, as long as you pick up the emotion most in need of comforting. A 4 year old dog, is not really interested as such, playing with a 3 month old. Furthermore, the natural course of events is that the biological Mother may be nearby, which will put off the 4 year old.
Make sure you allow the 4 year old to have his space, without giving cause for alarm or jealousy. The 3 month old, needs to be socialised with pups her own age, or you need to spend special play time with the 3 month old. Once they go on shared walks and come home tired, together, they'll soon accept one another.
As long as they both are fed in accordance to the individual need and pampered as per their requirement, they'll end up sleeping together. It may take a little time for the trust to build up, but a baby is usually accepted by an older dog, providing she does not steal his 'show'. They are bound to have their own dialogue when you are not around.

they will eventually get along. u can have two different breeds of dogs and they will get along just find dogs dont recognize differences in each other as much as we do. when my dog was 7 years old we got a little border collie mix that was 8 weeks and at first chase, who is a rat terrier sheltie mix, hated sammy. but now they r best buds they do everything together and cant get enough of each other. so it just takes times. some dogs longer than others. it took chase about a year to come around. he was very stubborn and ignored us but we eventually were able to show him that if he just ignores us he wont get the attention he wants. they will get along it just takes time

I think that pretty much any dog can get along. You just have to watch them interact for a while to make sure.
My husband and I have 3 dogs, his parents have 5 all sizes. When we go home all the dogs get along just fine. Oh and one of their dogs is a shihtzu.
they'll be fine.

Any breed dog can certainly learn to get along with another breed of dog! A dog is a dog is a dog!
(And, by gosh, we humans get along with dogs too!)

Of course they will, but quit allowing the puppy to bug the adult, and don't allow the adult to dominate the puppy. Don't listen to people who tell you to allow them to fight and let them work it out.. You be the leader, treat the equal and insist that they get along.
