I am buying a house and the den has wooden paneling up. I don't necessarily want to rip it out and start all over at this point, but I would like to do something with it that would brighten the den up. Any suggestions?

you know many times you pull down paneling and there is a perfect wall behind
painting is an option
kelly moore sells a paint called durapoxy that is water cleanup and actually sticks to oil surfaces 48 $ a gallon
roll it on then back brush for a smooth finish

You can prime and paint the paneling. Use a good quality primer, it may take two coats of primer with one coat of paint.

If it is stained wood paneling, you could try some Howard's restore a finish available at Home Depot in the paint aisle. Howard's is a solvent and you need to have good fresh air available when you use it. Just rub it into the wood with a rag, use solvent type rubber gloves. If the paneling is rough, the rag will catch and this won't work.

there is special clear lamination that you can purchase at Home Depot and possibly brush over it. I am not sure if you have to sand it. Before buying the home talk with your realtor about it and the expenses that you might encounter if it is worth it or not. There are other homes out there. We purchased a home in Folsom that was 3,800 sq feet and loved it because of the size and was all WOW about it. But never realized it is hard work in cleaning and maintenance! Now we are in an apartment in the Bay Area closer to my husbands work so he does not have to drive and I am trying to convince him to rent the home to a business to pay the rent off or sell it and look for a home here in the future since we made a profit that was a large amount and can exceed our taxes. Make sure you have a list of the pros and cons before you purchase a home. And you weigh them out.
And you both agree to the end of time. Or it will be a battle of who will have it...Instead of working together.
GOOD LUCK. right now if you are in the Bay Area a good time to buy a bad time to sell.

I have the same problem. I am thinking about priming it and painting it an ivory or egg shell color.
