In the original Greek it read, "Born from above". " Born again" is an error in translation.

Hey Laff,
Hit up Google video and search for Jordan Maxwell or David Icke. Maxwell was Icke's teacher and so is a little more informative but Icke is a better presenter. They offer a lot of information about ancient religions and answer this question as well. Be warned however that I had to watch many hours of lectures before I got the answers I was looking for, so bring some patience.
Really interesting stuff, check it out.
With Love

Whether a Christian will come to know it or not... or come to admit it once they become aware of the fact or not.
Born again is a modern term... ( even if we put it in the 6000 year spectrum of though which they tend to exist in ... )
A modern day term for what is Vedicly known as...
Twice Born.
Basiclly means you have taken the sacred thread ( for offering prayers AKA Arcana... ) and you have given your self to the family of God... and He has taken you in.
Once you have become twice born you are now a part of the family of the Most High.
There is still many many developmental stages but once twice born you are sure where you are going... you have a destination.
Genetic mutation?
No...
Emancipation... and eternal service.
No mutation.
just a new job.
and its a good one.
nice benefit package.

To be "born again" doesn't mean a genetic mutation. The Bible says in John 4:5-8 "Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit[b] gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You[c] must be born again.' The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit." I hope that makes since and that that answers your question! God bless!

In the bible there are two kinds of death (actually there are about six, but that's not really important) physical and spiritual. We all have a physical death, OBVIOUSLY, and I believe we have all have a spiritual death (some may contend with that). In order to have eternal life, according to the Bible is to have spiritual life. A dead spirit cannot be alive in Heaven. I'm not a biblical scholar, but I am a thinker and have studied the Bible regularly.
Take it or leave it.

Actually the "rebirth" symbolism is age-old, and like everything else in Christianity, it pre-dates Christianity. It's a fairly natural symbolism anyway - you're "reborn" into another level of consciousness. In the pagan mystery cults from which Christianity borrowed so much, it was common for the aspirant to be symbolically slain and then "resurrected" - in fact, the Lazarus story in the Gospels may refer to some sort of initiation rite of this type; and of course the legend of Christ's death and resurrection is itself the classic example. The tomb was associated with the womb, and death was considered a sort of "incubation" before one entered the "perfected life."
And now you can thumb me down because I didn't just say "Read the Bible!"

What does it mean to be a born again Christian? The classic passage from the Bible that answers this question is John 3:1-21. The Lord Jesus Christ is talking to Nicodemus, a prominent Pharisee and member of the Sanhedrin (a ruler of the Jews). Nicodemus had come to Jesus at night. Nicodemus had questions to ask Jesus.
As Jesus talked with Nicodemus, He said "...Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." Nicodemus said to Him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?" Jesus answered, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, You must be born again...." (John 3:3-7).

Never have understood that. I was born once and see no need to do it all over again; as for "finding" God, I never lost HIm in the first place...
