Matthew's gospel was written for the Jewish people. Matthew tries to convince the Jews that Jesus Christ was indeed the royal son of David. As Matthew continues to follow the line from David to Christ, Matthew traces the lineage through Jesus' earthly father, Joseph. This, too, indicates that Matthew is writing to the Jewish people. During first century times, if a Jewish man adopted a son, that son receives the father's lineage. Therefore, according to Jewish tradition, Jesus would be given the genealogy of his adopted father.

They both refer to Mary's genealogy since Jesus was only related to her by blood. Look carefully at the passage in Luke 3:23 - "He was the son, so it was thought, of Joseph,"
Both lineages go back to King David so even if one is about Mary and one is about Joseph, they both are connected at some point on the line, making Jesus a Jew any way you look at it.

There are two genealogies of Jesus in the Bible. One is purported to be Mary and the other Joesph. Since Jesus is not Joesph's son, why put that genealogy in the Bible in the first place? Because the important genealogy in Jewish culture was the father's and not the mother's. No Jew would ever accept Jesus as the Messiah in Jesus's day without knowing the father's genealogy. Jesus has to be a decedent of David through his father to be the Messiah. The Christians came up with the notion of one genealogy being Mary's. Adaption and maternal lines do not work that way in Jewish law.

In Matthew, Joseph plays an active role, and Mary plays a passive role. In Matthew, an angel appeared to Joseph (Matthew 1:20) and there is not record of an angel appearing to Mary. Matthew records Josephs thoughts but nothing of Mary's thoughts. On the other hand in the Gospel of Luke it tells the story from Mary's perspective. It is very obvious that the genealogy of Matthew is that of Joseph and the genealogy of Luke is that of Mary.
In Luke the words "the son of" are not in the original greek version. In the original it is simply saying of joseph, of heli. So it is not explaining the exact relationship of Joseph and Heli.

Joseph is the descendant from the house of David so it might be established that Jesus and Mary belonged to the same line, for in the Old Law a woman was not permitted to marry out of her own tribe, when there were no male heirs.

Mary had an immaculate conception, meaning that she was a virgin and pregnant.
Joseph the carpenter was chosen to be Jesus' father here on earth. the lineage is of the house of David Israels great king, because this is what God had promised them because his chosen people were not understanding a kingdom they could not see materialistically speaking, so they awaited and thought the messiah was going to be another great king like King David, Jesus was greater only they (God's chosen people, the jewish people of the day) did not see it and would not accept Him as their King and Savior, nor as the promised messiah. This was foretold in scriptures that Jesus would be rejected by his own people and even killed by them.
To this day many don't believe that Jesus was the messiah and are still waiting for God's promise of a great King. I know that their long awaited King has come and will be revealed in the final days when He does come back with all strength and glory that belongs to Him. They will think that the anti-christ will be the messiah for he will be rich, and hard like they think God is, which He isn't, ones perception of another person is often flawed and misunderstood. We are mere humans not all of us have the capability to accept what others talk about as fact because it goes against what they were thought, and accepted without questioning the reasoning behind. I think we all have a responsibility to ourselves to search for the truth, no matter what religion or background you come from because everything is so twisted and taken out of context that you cannot trust everything everyone interprets go and read it and research it for yourself and draw your own conclusions, you would be surprised how it changes your outlook of people and life.
Because one thing the bible comes through with is compassion and the love God had for his people, and now since they rejected Jesus, God has chosen the whole world as His people, that whomever believes in His son and strives to live and spread the good news of the Kingdom of God may be saved. You don't have to be priest, nun, rabbi, just a follower a believer, never be ashamed of speaking out to defend Jesus and His works they are the only thing on this planet that puts anything into perspective. Peace

It is actually both.
Since the covenant that was promised was also messed up by a king (remember Ahab? It was one of his sons that really screwed it up, I forget which though), that king was told he would never have a child to sit on the thone of Israel again. If this was so, then how in the world was God going to get around that? Well he went through one of Daivd's other children. The king that screwed up was of Solomons offspring, which leads to Joseph. The way God got around it was through one of David's other son's Nathan (2 Sam.5:14), which leads to Mary.
There is a prophecy that involves this-
Zech. 12:10-14 ( Read & understand)
Hebrew genealogies usually involve the man but as you can see in Luke's Gospel the difference.
Joseph' line show His Kingly blood line that is needed, and Mary's also show that he is is of a royal descent. Hey, KING of KING's!
God Bless.

Does it not say Jacob begot Joseph? It also seems to say Joseph begot Jesus. The lie purported by many Christians is that one geneology is through Mary. This is done to deny the contradiction.

Mary, my friend, if it was Joseph it would have been written like this: And Jacob begot Joseph the father of Jesus.
Read the Jesus Dynasty it clarifies a lot more.
