Matthew 1:1-15,
16. And Jacob begot Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus who is called Christ.
This is the genealogy of Christ through Merry! or through Joseph?

It was a patrilineal society. Since Joseph was not Jesus' biological father, then the decent of Jesus from the house of David had to come through Mary. But being patrilineal, Mary's lineage was not counted. Sort of like now, when women take husband's name, and baby takes mother's name, which is not her own. Personally, I own my own, since it's on my birth certificate, so I took it back, after producing babies with his name. I hate it that women disappear, even if by my name being on my birth certificate, my mother had to disappear. But it's always mother's baby, father's maybe anyway. My mother once said that marriage is an institution created by men to keep women in one place long enough for them to be pretty sure the babies are theirs. But of course Joseph knew.

If it would make the descent clearer, draw it like a normal drop-down family tree.
On one side you have Jacob = (wife not known).
Draw a line down to Joseph I
Put in an equals sign for Joseph's marriage to Mary
And drop the line down from Mary, not from the = sign
Under that, put Jesus of Nazareth
This shows that Mary was Jesus's mother, but not as a result of the Marital Union between Mary and Joseph.

Merry? Mary. You answered your own question. "Jacob begot Joseph..." It is the genealogy of Joseph.

Both Matthew and Luke give the lineage of Joseph as the lineage of Jesus. Unfortunately, their lineages don't agree. Check this from Luke against what Matthew wrote:

Now Jesus himself was about thirty years old when he began his ministry. He was the son, so it was thought, of Joseph,
the son of Heli, the son of Matthat,
the son of Levi, the son of Melki,
the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph,
the son of Mattathias, the son of Amos,
the son of Nahum, the son of Esli,
the son of Naggai, the son of Maath,
the son of Mattathias, the son of Semein,
the son of Josech, the son of Joda,
the son of Joanan, the son of Rhesa,
the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel,
the son of Neri, the son of Melki,
the son of Addi, the son of Cosam,
the son of Elmadam, the son of Er,
the son of Joshua, the son of Eliezer,
the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat,
the son of Levi, the son of Simeon,
the son of Judah, the son of Joseph,
the son of Jonam, the son of Eliakim,
the son of Melea, the son of Menna,
the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan,
the son of David, the son of Jesse,
the son of Obed, the son of Boaz,
the son of Salmon,[d] the son of Nahshon,
the son of Amminadab, the son of Ram,[e]
the son of Hezron, the son of Perez,
the son of Judah, the son of Jacob,
the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham,
the son of Terah, the son of Nahor,
the son of Serug, the son of Reu,
the son of Peleg, the son of Eber,
the son of Shelah, the son of Cainan,
the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem,
the son of Noah, the son of Lamech,
the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch,
the son of Jared, the son of Mahalalel,
the son of Kenan, the son of Enosh,
the son of Seth, the son of Adam,
the son of God.

Luke 3:23-8

Personally, I believe Matthew over Luke, as Matthew actually walked with Jesus. Luke came to Christianity after Christ's ascension.

Jesus is the only important founder of a religion who has a genealogy for thousands of years... the only one who was prophesied before coming, 300 times, the only one who made miracles to show He is God... and the only one who resurrected on earth.

Matthew 1:1-17: Lists the ancestors of Joseph, the legal father of Jesus, and presents the Genealogy of Jesus Christ, who descends directly from Abraham, Judah and David, until Joseph, the adoptive father of Jesus. Matthew wants to identify Jesus as a descendant of Abraham, and thus one of the covenant people and heir of the promises... he lists the ancestors of Joseph, from the tribe of Judah, the legal father of Jesus .

Matthew lists 42 ancestors, Thus there were 14 generations in all from Abraham to David, 14 from David to the exile to Babylon, and 14 from the exile to the Christ . Most ancestors were holy and important people... but some of us would have been ashamed of ancestors who were criminals, murderers, prostitutes, adulterous... the gospels are very candid and honest in presenting the true ancestors of Jesus Christ.

He lists 5 women, something very strange in Jewish genealogies. One of them a pagan, Ruth. Another an adulterous, Bathsheba. Two prostitutes, Tamar and Rahab.. And finally, the most blessed among women, the Mother of Jesus, Virgin Mary.
Six patriarchs who were promised that Messiah would be their seed: Abraham-Isaac-Jacob-Judah-David-Zerubbabel... but, out of the 6 patriarchs, 3 were definitely not the firstborn of their brothers: Jacob (Gen 25:25-26), Judah (Gen 29:31-35) and David (I Sam 16:11-13).
Rehab and Ruth and Tamar were not Jews, they were gentile. Christ did have Gentile blood. Jesus was not a 100% Jew.

Luke lists the ancestors of Virgin Mary, the Mother of Jesus, also from the tribe of Judah. Jesus is the descendent of Abraham, Judah and David on both His father's line and his mother's line.
Luke is writing for an audience that is predominantly Gentile, to the Greeks. So he takes Jesus’ genealogy all the way back to the beginning of Genesis: “the son of Adam, the son of God”.
.The 5 women of Matthew’s genealogy:

(1) TAMAR--is a Canaanite woman wife of Judah’s eldest son, Er. Gen 38:11-30 informs us that Judah’s daughter-in-law, deprived of a promised husband (the last of Judah’s sons), impersonated a harlot. She enticed Judah to lie with her and from that illicit union came two sons - Perez and Zerah. And from Perez sprung Boaz, David and ultimately the Christ.

(2) RAHAB--was known as ‘the harlot. Because Rahab had given friendly welcome to the spies, she’d exercised faith in the spies’ God (Heb 11:31). She believed that Jehovah was about to destroy Jericho and give Israel Canaan, so she petitioned the spies to spare her (Joshua 2:9-13).
Having entered into a covenant agreement with her (Joshua 2:14,17-20), she tied a red cord in the window, demonstrating her faith (belief in action) and was saved by Jehovah who didn’t let her habitation in the wall be destroyed (Joshua 6:25)... and she became the mother (ancestor) of Christ.

(3) RUTH was a Moabitess, a gentile, a pagan (Ruth 1:4)
From her marriage union with Boaz, David came and the greater Son of David, Jesus. David, strictly speaking, was the third generation from Ruth.

(4) BATHSHEBA, Mat.1:6:
She had adultery with King David (2S.11:4).
- Solomon, her son with David, was the ancestor of Joseph (Mat.1:7)... the "legal father" of Jesus.
- Nathan, the other son with David, was the ancestor of Virgin Mary (Lk.3:31)... the "real mother" of Jesus, thus avoiding the Jeconiah curse.

(5) VIRGIN MARY, Mat.1:16: She is the Mother of Jesus, "the most blessed among women" proclaims the Bible (Lk.1:42), the one who "all generations shall call blessed".

The two lists of Matthew and Luke give apparently two different names to the father of Joseph:
Jacob the father of Joseph (Mat.1:16).
- Joseph, the son of Heli (Lk.1:23).
The Jeconiah Curse:
If Joseph had been Jesus' father according to the flesh, He could never have occupied the throne, for God's word barred the way. There had been a curse on this royal line since the days of Jeconiah. In Jeremiah 22:30 we read, Thus says the Lord: write this man down as childless, a man who shall not prosper in his days: for none of his descendants shall prosper, sitting on the throne of David, and ruling any more in Judah. Joseph was in the line of this curse. Hence, if Jesus had been Joseph's son, He could not have sat on David's throne.
We find another genealogy of Jesus in Luke 3. This is Mary's line, back to David, through Nathan, not Jeconiah (Luke 3:31)... If Virgin Mary would not have been virgin, the whole genealogy of Jesus in Mat.1 and Lk.3 would have been a farce... but Virgin Mary was indeed a Virgin, and Jesus was not conceived by Joseph but by the Holy Spirit in person .
Joseph was the "legal father" of Jesus, the "adopted father", but not the "natural father".

Tamar was the Canaanite wife of Judah’s eldest son, Er, who died prematurely (Gen 38:1-7). When the patriarch Judah refused her the normal considerations of remarriage, she tricked him as a harlot into fathering her son, who then was incorporated into what was to become the messianic line (Gen 38:8-30). Judah declares her “righteous” (Gen 38:26).

Ruth and Rahab were also gentiles... Jesus indeed was not 100% Jew.

Matthew's genealogy
Jesus was called the "son of David" in Mat 1:1, which is a clear reference to his right to inherit David's throne.

In 2Sam 7:12-17 God tells David (through the prophet Nathan) that David's kingdom would remain forever and his royal line would go through the son who would build the temple or as it is also called, the house of God. This son of David is Solomon, as we can read in 1Chr 22:7-10.

Only Matthew's genealogy mentions Solomon (Salmon) as well as the following kings after him, therefore we can see that this is the "royal line" and it shows the legal right to David's throne being passed down all the way to Joseph who adopted Jesus, thus making him the heir of David's kingdom.

Since the right to the kingdom always passes from the father to the son, we can conclude that Matthew's genealogy lists Jesus' ancestors through his "father", Joseph.. Matthew's list:

1 Jesus
2 Joseph
3 Jacob
4 Matthan
5 Eleazar
6 Eliud
7 Achim
8 Sadoc
9 Azor
10 Eliakim
11 Abiud

13 Salathiel
14 Jechonias
15 Josias
16 Amon
17 Manasses

24 Asa
25 Abia
26 Roboam
27 Solomon
28 David
29 Jesse
30 Obed

32 Salmon
33 Naasson
34 Aminadab
35 Aram
36 Esrom
37 Phares
38 Judas
39 Jacob
40 Isaac
41 Abraham

Luke's genealogy must list Jesus' ancestors through his mother:
Luke's list (in inverse order)
1.David
2.Nathan
3.Mattatha
4.Menna
5.Melea
6.Eliakim
7.Jonam
8.Joseph
9. Judah
10.Simeon
11.Levi
12.Matthat
13.Jorim

36. Joseph
37.Jannai
38. Melki
39. Levi
40. Matthat
41. Heli
42.Joseph
43. Jesus

(NOTE: some Bible scholars say that Luke lists another 31 ancestors for Jesus, but some of them are repeats of names in Matthew's list . Therefore, there are only 43 DIFFERENT names in each list shown)
