I cut my dog's nails just about 1 x a wk. You don't want the nails to start curving. A good indication for me is when my dog runs throught the kitchen floor and I can hear the nails hitting the floor. Also when she runs through the kitchen and slides. I cut my dog's nails often because she is an indoor pit pup.

Cutting a dog's nail every 4 months probably works well with an outdoor dog.

Look for the quick in your dog's nail. If his nail is white it would be very easy to determine. Be careful and cut at a 45 degree angle close to the quick. You do NOT want to cut the quick as it is very painful for your dog. You can buy clippers that comes witha special powder. If you accidentally cut the quick and the dog's nail starts to bleed, dip it in the powder & it will instantly stop the bleeding.

I cut my dogs nails once a week. If done often, the nails will stay short and the quicks won't grow. I grind my dachshunds nails because since you can see her nails, they look nicer short and rounded. My cocker has long hair on her feet and you don't see her nails, but I like keeping then short so you don't hear her nails hit the floor. Keep nails short and well trimmed also keeps hard wood floors unscratched....as I have those throughout my house as well. If you can't keep the nails trimmed every week...at least do them frequently enough so the nails don't get too long and cause discomfort the your dog. If allowed to grow too long, they can break and split or even grow into the pads which can be very painful.

It all depends on how much they naturally wear down - my dogs are on a farm and so not many tarmac roads to wear them down - but even then, I only need to do them once every four months or so. If you look at the underside of the nails, you can see where the actual soft part grows - the topside should be no more than around 1/4" past - also, use this as a guide and NEVER cut past the soft underside or the nail will bleed.

Once a week is a rule of thumb on nails. You don't want them to get too long because then it's very hard to get them short again, as you can only cut little bits and wait for the quick or cuticle to go down before you can do it again. Stay on top of it, and then you won't have a problem down the line.

Every 4 months - How Ridiculous! I have show dogs, I have 5 adult dogs in all, 2 puppies. I take the tips of "every week". My dogs nails are beautiful!!!

my dog has frequent walks throughout the day and this helps to file them down. However a sign that your dog's nails need cutting is if they click together when the dog is walking. This is a sign they need cutting. It could be at least 6 months before they need doing again

It depends. puppies need their nails cut more often and older dogs less and it depends on how much they wear down the nails by themselves by walking on cement or other abrasive surfaces. If they are starting to get a hook on the end it needs to be taken off. Ask your vet to show you or a groomer if you go to one, Most of the time vets will do for free when you come in for your booster .

Mine only has hers cut in Winter and even then only about once a month. She doesn't need it in Summer as she spends more time outside then and her nails wear down naturally!

About every 4 to 6 weeks. I would not suggest doing it yourself because there is a vein in the nails that will bleed profusely if cut. Taking your dog to the vet or a groomer is your best bet!

If the dog gets plenty of exercise (outside), then it's nails wear down naturally.

A dog's nails only need to be cut if it does not get plenty of outdoor exercise (maybe when it is too old?).
