This is my own personal opinion, but it seems that Vista is NOT ready for public use yet.
In Windows XP, if you plug in a printer or sound card or graphics card, etc., and if it is not "digitally signed", XP will give you the option to install the "drivers" (software that operates the equipment). In Vista, you don't have that option, so you might as well throw the printer (or whatever it is) away, because you have to buy a new one (printer, etc) that is compliant with Vista's rigid security measures.
The problem with this is that not only do you need to buy new hardware, but the drivers that ARE available (the hardware with acceptable Vista "drivers") are being "mass produced" with little attention to security features, and there are a number of "drivers" that have internal security leaks that bypass Vista's security measures.
This is what I gleaned from a friend of mine who is a professional in the field, IF I understood him correctly.
The only way Vista will work propery (AFTER all the bugs and Service Packs and upgrades) is to buy a brand new computer with all the hardware pariphrials (spelling?) already installed, because any body selling a computer with Vista already installed must also make sure that all the rest of the equipment is also Vista compliant.
The other problem with Vista is that it is NOT compatible with ANY thing else.
None your software, games, etc. will run in Vista, if I understand it correctly. And if you DO install Vista on your computer, you can NOT go back to Windows XP without reformatting your hard drive, so you lose everything yet again! Any documents, image files, etc that are created in Vista will NOT work in XP.
I HOPE I'm wrong about a lot of this, but if so, I fear that my concerns are only marginally in error.

Windows Vista will be good when Service Pack 1 is released (upcoming, not yet). Like when XP, 2000, etc were released, it's buggy. If you can wait, then wait. If you need something now, XP Pro or Home are stable as rocks. Be sure to get one that already has SP2 integrated into it so that it recognizes newer hardware.

I've been using Vista since it was first offered back in February. I find it to be much faster then XP, very stable, and very secure. It has not crashed, frozen, or blue screened yet. It does need a little tweaking so that it will run the way you want it to, but so does XP. I like it.

It works fine for basic Internet surfing I don't know how it does for offline work .Its better to get a pc that that vista loaded rather than upgrading a current xp model .A most important fact is to get At least 1gb of ram alot of the lower price models will only have 512 ram .
