The answer to the initial question, "Who is God?", can never be understood academically. Since God is Spirit, and all his principals are based in the Spirit, this question can only be answered by you after a personal and spiritual relationship with Him, through His Son Jesus Christ. To know how to do this you would have to go through the following: commitment to Him, prayer, Bible study, meditation, fasting, and a willingness to change when truth is learned. If you are trying to understand His nature in the context of preconceived ideas about Him, it's not going to happen. Remember His true nature, as stated in scripture, "God is Love". Sometimes we become so wrapped up in ourselves and the trevia around us we don't even hear Him when He does give an answer. In answer to this he simply says, "Be still and know that I am GOD".

God has a name. It's Jehovah. God is not a name, just like you call your parents Mom and Dad but they, too, have names. And He is not a person, not a physical being but a spirit. He does not cause evil or harm, it's the work of Satan, the Devil once an angel of Jehovah. Through him, he entices people to be bad, to do wrong, to be really evil and to be against Jehovah. Do not accuse Jehovah of mistreating and punishing people who are doing good in their lives. He is a God of love, so why will He do that? Get real.

I'm a little confused by your question - but - what I can come up with is this.
If you didn't have a *God* to question, what would be your answer to yourself?
How would you explain to yourself why bad things happen to good people?
I think that answer is going to be the only one you can/will accept...the answer you give/find yourself.
So again, ask yourself the Question... Why does something frightful happen to me, and not my neighbor, good things happen to bad, and bad things happen to good - while taking God out of the equation.
To try to explain God is something none of us can even fathom, much less when we're already confused by the basic rule of life - s**t happens.

This "question" makes no sense. If you lead a good and moral life in this life, you will be rewarded in Heaven when you die. God doesn't punish us in this life. God doesn't give us the problems. He lets us cope with them, He lets us ask for help through prayer, but He doesn't cause bad things to happen. We have free will to make choices and let the cards fall where they may, and it's up to US to deal with it, not God.

For the majority of people their idea of what God is like depends upon the nature of their upbringing and relationship with their father. Looking at your view - your childhood was ...
less than perfect.

Well I don't think you understand the purpose of good and bad. Whatever happens to you good or bad, is necessary in order for you to progress in life. It may not seem it at the time as no one wants to be in a bad situation. But when something bad happens to us it's usually in order for us to deal with it properly and then come out of it a better person. They are obsticals. And I respect the bad things, as well as the good. But they all amount to being the person you are... and they all are intended to amount to the greater good in the long run.
It's like going to school. Most people don't like school, its a total drag, you rather stay at home or hang out with your friends. But school is there to get you further in life, to help you progress, it may feel negative and unplesent at the time, but when you come out of school with good grades... then you'll realise the purpose of school is for a positive thing. But just like real life problems, you can approach them negatively, not bothering to study etc bad grades and you leave school with no qualifications, and then difficulties in life start occuring... this is at first is negative? And why? Because you had a negative approach to school.
Make sure you always deal with your problems as constructively as posible and respectfully. Respect life's negativity as a hurdle to get you further in life.
And if you believe in God, then you'll understand that that's his real purpose in this.

Sounds like you know what you believe in, and that's good. Hopefully karma can get the people that don't do good in this world.
