You have to decide what it is you need to accomplish that your current lens lineup, a macro lens and the 18-55mm lens, aren't doing for you. Simply buying lenses won't help you if they don't serve your goals.

It sounds from your title like you're looking for an "all-around" stay on the camera lens to use for general purposes, rather than looking for a telephoto zoom. In other words, if I read your title question correctly, you want something to replace the kit lens as your "all-around" lens.

If this is correct, then here is my recommendation: try the Tamron 24-135mm SP lens. It won't be as wide as the 18-55mm lens, but it will have more telephoto and it will be sharper in my opinion at all apertures. It's affordable. Canon makes an expensive equivalent with image stabilization, the 28-135mm, but the reviews I've seen from Canon owners indicate that other than the image stabilization, the Canon is inferior to the Tamron (surprisingly). The only two issues with the Tamron: it won't be as wide as your 18mm setting and it doesn't have image stabilization.

You might also check out the 18-200mm lenses from Tamron and Sigma, as those lenses have very wide ranges and are affordable compared to their counterparts from the camera companies.

If you already have a 18-55, then a 70-200 or there abouts would be nice, The gap between 55 and 70, wouldn't amount to much.
