Usually, the man opens the door. But if you're just walking into the office and you're in the front, it's okay to open the door and push it open so the man can come inside. But proper etiquette says that the man always opens the door for a woman, a child always opens the door for an adult, etc.

There is really no need to ask this question.Since the early 60's woman's rights have been such an issue that it is proper for a woman to open a door for a man anytime she reaches it first. Some men still believe it's a mans world but not one will say anything except thank you to her for opening the door for him.

Yes, it could be, if the woman is the man's manager.

Frankly, I'm old school and I always open the door for a lady under any circumstances, but in today's business environment, equality reigns, so it doesn't seem to matter much anymore. Or at least, equality is supposed to be popular with companies...some just pay lipservice to that fact and never abide by their own rules. d:(

Unfortunately, I've noticed that it's also become very rare to hear the two words, "Thank you", when a door is opened anymore.

Yes, it is proper for a woman to open the door for a man, especially if his hands are full - it's just basic politeness.

I have found, though, that sometimes the man I hold the door for won't enter the building until I go first, anyways. They usually say something like "Oh no, you go first, dear" (argh!) and just stand there like a bump on a log until I go through. It seems like some sort of wierd little power trip for them.

So now I tend to just open the door myself, walk through, and then hold the door for them to catch on the way in. I got sick of playing the "who goes first" game and refuse to engage in it anymore.

I will always open a door for a woman. I was always taught to be polite. I would always open a door for anyone if I was there first. I always walk on the outside of a woman whilst on the pavement. It´s become such a habit now I have to do it. Call me old fashioned if you want, but where I come from a woman´s presence is special.

Of course it is.

In business, men and women are equal, therefore the laws regarding female versus male etiquette are overruled by seniority and age.

However, if the business is very "old hat" style, then the senior member may prefer to open the door for the woman because his traditional style may be more important to him.

I just open the door for anyone... male or female... if I happen to get to the door first. It's common courtesy.

Yes, it is proper. If she gets to the door first, then she can open it, and go in. The man can follow her through.

It is proper for whoever gets to the door first to hold it open for the others, yes.

It seems to me that if the man's hands are full, it is common courtesy to open the door for him.

Sure, if you are in front of a man or entering before he gets there, it is gentle womanly of you to hold the door, especially if his hands are full.
