Why put tape over your alarm clock if you are falling asleep with the tv on?-Just curious.
Eating a sandwich doesn't help either. Your body is forced into digestion mode and makes you unable to sleep. You really should eat no more than 2 hours before bedtime.
If your mind is racing, try writing down everything that is bothering you then go to bed.
Try reading a book that is dull.
Is pain keeping you up at night?
You should also keep a sleep diary and get an evaluation by a sleep clinic, (see your doctor).

I would just lay there until you fall asleep. I hate when that happens to me where I can't sleep, one time I went 30 hours without sleeping cause I just couldn't stay asleep, but then finally I got so tired I was able to fall asleep.

Also make sure nothing is on your mind and make sure you aren't worrying about anything. You should be in a good mood before you go to sleep. Watching TV actually helps for me as it takes my mind off of anything I am worried about.

Just lay there and you'll eventually fall asleep. :)

I sympathise - its horrendous and can completely mess up your days and of course the more you can't sleep, the more likely you are to go to bed anticipating sleeplessness, which will cause anxiety thus you are less likely to sleep - vicious circle. If you are old enough, you can try an over-the-counter remedy such as Nytol One-a-Night. It can help break the back of your anxiety about insomnia and let you relax enough to sleep. Its only designed for short term use but hopefully that should be enough to get you over this.

See your doctor.
I had insomnia for over a year and I'm still not sure if it caused my depression or the other way around. I even drank a few beers and took oxycontin and vicoden together one evening, but that didn't make me sleep.
